Based on the novel by Aldous Huxley.

Starring Demi Moore, Solo's Alden Ehrenreich, Hannah John-Kamen, Jessica Brown Findlay, Harry Lloyd, and more, the tale of John the Savage and an updated society sold as a utopia is getting a fittingly futuristic turn from showrunner David Wiener. Welcome to New London.

    Hannah John-Kamen

    Oh Really?! :)

Well I'm in for Season 1 then!

The book is well worth a read in these lockdown days.

I've read the first few pages before.. and liked it. I kinda have the gist of the rest of the story from other sources.

I keep meaning to get back to it. Though.. presented in TV form with Hannah John-Kamen... come oooonnnnn! :D

Dropped today I've watched the first couple of episodes and I have to say I am really enjoying it and the world they are building.

1: That was fun! What an orgy for .. ahem.. regular tv :)

Cool to see Hannah John-Kamen. Some very picturesque scenes shot with Alden Ehrenreich. A little bit of Han Solo vibe to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    2: Wow!
Didn't think they were going for a complete massacre! Guessing it's the "in" to get John the Savage back to their world.

    Seeing
    the world controller
    in action was cool.

Up to episode 5 now and they are not shy about there orgies anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    3:
Awe that scene on the rocket with the blood
    :(
    Well, Johns in.

Also I must say the did not recognise Demi Moore at all till I checked who the actress was.

Have to look this up. One of my favourite books.

I think my main take away from this was Harry Lloyd. He did a fantastic job as Marx, who is probably the most complicated character in the story.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Finished it this morning and I must say the 3 main leads did a fantastic job to be fair to them.

I must say I thought they've used music very effectively in this show to illustrate the contrasts between the falsity of the New London existence and that of those in the "Savage" lands.

    Particularly significant for me was
the moment after their return to New London where Lenina finds John's music player in his bag of personal effects where she hears real music for the first time. (Neil Young's Natural Beauty) I think JBF acted this scene very well.

Another scene enhanced very well by music was the chase in the truck with John and Linda as they fled from the massacre. (Stevie Nicks' Edge of Seventeen)

I dunno it felt quite flat to me. It looked great and is paced well enough, but the characters, well I didn't feel any real draw to them, JBF and Marx at best. Han Sola nope. The world of New London was all too obvious and young and sexy and the exploration of that was minimal. [insert orgy scene here] to little obvious purpose and seemed to be the only tool they had to hammer this home. The characters were so void it was hard to feel any sympathy for them, or disgust. We got a glimpse of young kids but of adolescents nada and old age was one scene, a scene and premise that deserved much more time and attention and constant references to the crematorium smoke's vivid colours didn't suffice. The whole never saw blood or tears and didn't know what virginity is just rang hollow, drugged up on goofballs or no.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I'd agree very much with that, They overstretched credulity with that stuff, which took somewhat from the show.

How could a society for which "orgies" had seemingly supplanted other pastimes, like sporting events, concerts etc., not at least have some concept of an intact versus a ruptured hymen?

Likewise, they can manipulate cells in a hatchery, but haven't seen blood...?? and one doesn't need to see a person cry to be aware of lacrimation, which also provides the fluid moistening the organ to which they are so fond of attaching hi-tech communications devices.
They should have thought more about such things when scripting the story.

    4: I didn't notice
the city being raised on top of Old London until the scene with the father falling. I think the father felt something deeper than was shown (maybe not) but the show (directing?/acting?)
    didn't get it across well.

    Anyway.
    Soma time!

This was something I found was very actually very lacking in the world building. In the book people enjoyed athletics that required specialised equipment. Part of what kept people working was to be able to afford their equipment for the sports they loved to do in their free time. I'd have loved to have seen more of that.

    5: Even More Orgy!
I wonder what's the deal with the World Controller and whether that's Indra she's talking to or another World Controller.
At this point the show could do with expanding to show just how huge the world is. It's feeling a bit narrow at the moment.

    6: Well that was wierd.
I assume this Indra AI is either glitching or maybe more performing some kind of experiment. Also some kind of ominous origin story for the world controllers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    7: Hold on what?!
Death?! Still looks like Indra is up to something. Doubt it's to kill John though.

    8: Oh,
    a revolution maybe?
    Just one more episode
so it feels a bit late for it. I dunno.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

Finished! Overall: It was alright. The world felt a bit.. small? compared to the small bit of the book I'd read a few years back. Then it only got narrower as the series went on. A bit more
    I-Robot than Brave New World.

    9: Wow!
Yep, a revolution! That violence! I guess I'd forgotten how quickly they could go from 0 to 60 from the earlier episodes. Not sure I was expecting a .. i dunno.. kinda happy.. ish?.. ending.

Feels like they might have left a maybe-opening for a possible season 2 depending on how the series is received. I'm not sure it's enough though.

I seen this advertised on Sky today and done a search for it here but it was just books it came up in so I take it this must be based on the book or books about it. Could be good.

Is he the Tom Hiddleston (Loki) lookalike?

I thought it looked amazing. Would like to know why the America are savage countries now and Great Bratain or maybe Europe as well are so advanced and modern. It looked great but would like some backstory on why the world is the way it is.

Well that took a turn for the worse. Much better episode than episode one and some of it is starting to make sense but some still not.

Just finished this today. Beyond the main and obvious plot, I found the whole thing incredibly disjointed, wasn't sure who I should root for (didn't care for anyone really) and the whole thing just played out in a very simple manner. I realise that the drugged out nature was part of the plot, but I felt like almost everyone was sleepwalking through their parts and I just didn't care what happened to them.

Set up for a second season I guess, but wouldn't really feel the need to return to it.

    Is the book any better?

+1 here for not recognising Demi when she popped up. Even her trademark raspy voice seemed to be missing. She was the only character who really stood out on the show for me.

A pity that. It had potential. A lot more than that rubbish "The Third Day" crap show. Just typical. Maybe Netfliks or Apple will pick it up or Amazon someone please.

I feel like they took the book and built on it. Worth a read

I think a few watchers above missed some points of the show.
Don't mind it being cancelled - I was happy with the conclusion it reached and not dying for more
