CV joint and brake pads cost?

    Hi all.

    I have a 2007 Audi A4, 2.0 litre diesel.

I got the tyres changed today on it. They were wrecked and it was well needed.

The guy changing them showed me on the passenger side that the CV joint needs to be fixed/replaced. There was oil coming out (I think it was oil anyway).

He also said I need brake pads. I knew this already as my friend who is a mechanic said they’d need doing soon.

They have a mechanic there Saturday and he said if I drop it off he’d get the mechanic to sort both things out.

He said it should be between €200 to €250 hopefully for everything.

Just wondering is that a good price? It seems fair to me. He wasn’t pushy or anything, and I knew the brake pads needed to be done.

Is he replacing the cv joint or just the boot?

I am not sure tbh. I suppose I should tell them Saturday to let me know price before doing it?

I'd say it will be just the CV boot, 50-70 on parts, 3 hours labour... €200 would be pretty OK IMO.

Well he said it should be between €200-250 for the entire job i.e. CV joint issue and brake pads replacements.

    Sound right?

I would say it's not completely out of it but any more would be a bit saucy.

Sounds like a fair price but do ask what exactly needs doing about the CV.

    Will do. Thanks folks.

So, if this is say €200 on Saturday and I just got 4 new tyres for €320 then that's €520 spent on the car with NCT until the end of October.

I hate getting things done unless it is close to the NCT, but I suppose it is better to get things like tyres and brake pads done. Not due a service for another while at least.

It must certainly is better to get those things done. It's madness to let them run down to their minimum, your life, and those of others, depends on them working 100% not just when pottering about town but in those once-in-a-blue-moon emergency situations too.

    These are basic essential items.

You’re absolutely right. Silly mindset for me to have. I’ll be glad to have it sorted come Saturday.

On another point, with the new tyres, noticed today on motorway when I’m up over 70mph the steering wheel is vibrating. Not an awful lot, but it didn’t do that before. Should I say it to them Saturday and get them to correct the balance? I don’t know much about these things and don’t want them to fob me off. They didn’t put the car up high to change the tyres - maybe this was it?

Got Brembo brake pads 2 weeks ago - €120 fitted. Inner CV boot replaced - €100.

    Good independent/generalist in Dublin 15.

    Update.

They fixed the CV joint and four new break pads.

    Total cost €250.00

What annoyed me is I asked for a receipt and they said the receipt book is in the van with the on call person and to call in during the week and they would give me one.

They are in business quite a while so I thought a receipt would have been given without having to ask.

Would you bother going back for a receipt?

I am not sure. I don't think it was replaced. He said something about a nut? Sorry, I do not know anything about this stuff! After googling it, I think it was just the boot.
