Part-Time and Self Employed

Been freelancing for about 18 months. Took a flexible part-time warehouse job via an agency about 8 months ago to supplement things when freelance wasn't going so well. Part time was averaging 16-25 hours a week at most (minimum wage).

Things picked up with the freelance gigs late last year -- YAY! Planned to hang on to the part time job for first half of this year for security to see how things went on the freelance side of things, but was becoming evident that it wasn't financially necessary.

Then Corona hit. All my freelance income/gigs gone -- NAY! Given the nature of the warehouse job (pharma), they haven't closed, but I'm still only able to get the 16-25 hours a week maximum.

So my freelance income disappeared over night, and now I'm stuck with a job where (as it's essentially zero hours contract) I'm lucky if I come out with €250 a week at best...If I get the hours.

Are there any entitlements, or is this a case of tough sh!t?

    Thanks

Probably the latter I'm afraid, unless you are working three days or less (in which case you can apply for Jobseekers Benefit/Short-time work)

You won't be entitled to COVID payment because you continue to work. Ironically you would have been entitled to 350/week if you didn't have the 250/week job.

If you have kids, there might be other supports available. Also, support with rent if you are renting.

    I know. Only €180 this week :(

Playing it safe for once has backfired nicely.

I would say that having multiple revenue streams is a good idea. No one could have predicted this.

Has anyone that's working part-time hours got a payslip with "covid-19" payment listed on it? I'm currently working 24hrs a week and get paid minimum wage, but my payslip says something completely different the last 3 weeks now. The last 2 weeks I got paid as normal for the hours I worked, but my payslip said I should be getting a different amount. This week though I got paid for the hours I worked plus an extra €35ish. I'm a bit confused as to what's going on and my boss isn't much help either, I've heard from another person I work with that we have to pay anything extra we get back later in the year in tax:confused: If anyone could help with telling me what exactly is happening with my payslips that would very much appreciated

Sounds like employer is paying you through the wage subsidy scheme. Not a problem if you are better off, but there may be a tax liability at the end of the year. However, if you are on low wages and part-time without any other income, its likely you won't pay much (if any) tax.

However, if you have other income and you are ending up worse off because of this, you can insist that you employer pays you simply for the hours you work, and not through the subsidy scheme. Your employer cannot pay you less money without your agreement.
