Not sure if this is the correct place to ask but.. I've recently purchased a house, and the front door when closed cant be opened without the key - does this require a new lock or a new handle or what? If anyone could advise that would be great, have nearly locked myself out a few times :D

    Thanks

The inside should have a thumb screw for fire exit purposes.
Most door lockswhen pulled to close from the outside require a key.
Were you used to the other version, always open unless locked with a key?

Yeah the inside has a thumb screw - Yes was used to the other version that doesnt require a key unless locked. And as we are in the countryside this would be fine, just need to figure out how to change this

It's the mechanism in the outside handle that dictates.

You have the “LEVER / PAD” mechanism.

You want the “LEVER / LEVER” mechanism.

You change the outside handle to “LEVER / LEVER” mechanism - one that allows it to open the door all the time, unless locked.

“LEVER / LEVER” AND “LEVER / PAD” DOOR HANDLES

    “Lever / Lever” Door Handles
The most common variation of door handle is called “lever / lever”. This means that the lever on the exterior side of the door is connected directly to the lever on the interior side. Simply put, if you push down the lever on the exterior, the lever on the interior will move down also.

The other variation of door handle is called “lever / pad”. This means that the lever on the exterior side of the door is separated from the lever on the interior side. Lever / pad door handles are used with lever / pad door locks to give an added security feature. The pad side will always be on the exterior side of the door. The lever side will always be on the interior side of the door. If you push down the exterior pad side, the interior lever side will not move.

    “Lever / Pad” Door Handles
Lever / pad locks are used to prevent someone from simply pushing down on the outside handle and walking in. The key is required every time to open the door. If you close the door behind you and you don’t have the key; you will be locked out.

Lever pad door handles will normally have a distinctive appearance on the exterior side. The exterior lever will normally be shorter and shaped like a paddle. Hence the name “pad”. The lock centres on some lever pad door handles can be different on the exterior than to the interior. The exterior lock centres can be 62mm and the interior lock centres can be 92mm. At the moment we stock lever / lever variations of all our door handles, as these are by far the most common variation. Please contact us if you require lever / pad door handles for your door.
