Just rang the knacker there to get a ewe picked up that died on Friday. They said they are no longer doing a fallen animal collection service as the department capped the payment at 26 euro a few weeks ago. Anyone hear about this? Would be a 80 mile round trip for me to drop off the ewe....

There should be another collector doing the area but I'd imagine the price will start to get eye watering soon enough if the competition goes.

Maybe give the Dept a ring and tell them that you need a number for someone to collect or a burial licence?

Who was this, Larry Earle? I sent 2 ewes to them in early March, 30 euro each before that they were charging 60 for collection and creeping up every year. I'm in south Wicklow.

Yeah, thats right. He's stopped doing the collections now. I'm in North Wicklow so its an 80 mile round trip for me to Camolin. Doesn't make sense for one ewe...

Would Kildare Hunt knackery in Punchestown be any closer to you

I got the knackery here the other day. Charged me €30, which I thought was ok as they had increased their prices up to €40 a year ago. Sounds like their still charging over the limit now as well.

Just put it into google maps and its a 102km round trip. Maybe I'm being lazy but just pissed off that we have no collection service here anymore. So basically, I have to spend nearly half a day disposing of a ewe legally now.

That sucks, they probably won't come to me either, I wouldn't fancy the journey either. Maybe you could bring it to UCD for a post mortem and they could dispose of it there but I don't know. Any time I needed a PM I used the local vet but I still needed to dispose of the carcase after.

The dept. aren't keen on burying animals but if you want to do it legally that's the other option. Off the record you could do what nature does best and let it become carrion for the kites and buzzards who will make short work of it.

We had an issue with Larry earlier in the year too.
We rang and left a message on the machine and they never got back to us saying that they weren't going to be picking up.

Its interesting that you mention that. 20 years ago there were no kites and buzzards. I'm sure thats when the rules were made. Now we have lots of these birds and anything left out is stripped pretty quick. Foxes then make off with the rest and pull the bones down their burrows. Anything more natural than that?!
