Throw your unnamed bikes and we can name them.
Are you not feeling the love from your bike? Feel like it doesn't give you it's all?
    Not named your bike?
    This is why!

I imagine a very low take up on this thread :D

i did volunteer to go first...

    509471.jpg

note: i have two geneses, both equilibriums. so a pun on the manufacturer (e.g. jenny) will cause confusion.
but by the same token i cannot just refer to 'the equilibrium' so a distinguishing name would be handy.

This is Jelly! They're adorable, I see many more cooperative adventures in yer future!
Jelly is full of fruity punch but smooth and silky with it ;)

Important bike naming note - bike have no gender but periodically identify as one or none as they feel :D

Oh what a dote! Very smart. Blide (blid--eh) loves to explore and is always up for an adventure. They don't mind being covered in mud or long days (and nights) out on the road or path or muck and but they scrub up well for more formal tarmac based occasions. They have a utilitarian cool Scandi chic that belies their American roots. :D

So, with two names, do I pick, or is there a vote or something?

It is up to you, as Bilde's owner, you know them best :D

*but you must tell us all :D

Well, having discovered that Blide is Danish for gentle, and with such a beautiful description be eeeee, I feel like Blide is a most fitting name, and my bike will wear it with pride.

On a different, but not altogether unrelated note, I have to say that, while I agree with bikes not having a gender (even on purely grammatical grounds), I feel that using the pronoun "they" is a little clunky, not least because it's normal usage is as a pronoun denoting more than one, either people or objects (being the plural pronoun for he, she and it). While "they" can be used to denote a person whose sex is not known - "one of the cyclists was here, but they are gone now", it does suggest that a sex could be known.

I feel that "it" as a pronoun, going forward, is a better all round fit when referring to our bicycles...just sayin'

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 25,531 Mod ✭✭✭✭CramCycle

I feel that a bikes sex is determined by its owner, the owner may not want one at all, which is fine. I have never liked anyone or anything being referred to as 'it', tis just not right.

What pronoun do you use for your fridge :D:D

Had to think about this as I have always referred to the fridge as, "The Fridge". As in "FFS, who left The Fridge open again", "FFS, close The Fridge door", "What is wrong with you, why can't you close The Fridge door". "Mother of God, I swear I'll go mental if you don't learn how to close The Fridge door", and so on.

I tend to refer to nearly all useful items with a female pronoun, but i presume this is a trained habit from my father who referred to everything that was useful as female, and everything that wasn't as 'it'. There was never a time he used a male pronoun unless referring specifically to a bull/bullock/bull calf or a male person.

    "Yes" :D

There's nothing like taking a discussion to it's logical (illogical??) conclusion :D

Let's change the question to "Where is your fridge?"

And let's assume we're aiming for some form of grammatical accuracy, so that we're not answering with fragments, but instead with a complete sentence, containing a subject, and no redundancy (deliberately renaming the subject in a response to a query in order to avoid using a pronoun)

After this we might go back to naming bikes :)

What a clean machine! Their name is Rudy. They are a smart bike, they love a bit of scenery and a bit of atmosphere. a middle aged bike, they are settled and comfortable with who they are and as a result are a contented, largely problem free bike who only bother you when they're really wearing out. They enjoy reading the surface ahead, and naturally dodge all drama!

This is Chousal (prounounced choux like the pastry + sal). On the outside they look quite delicate, with their old school narrow tubing and pared back minimalism, but this hides a steely toughness that belies their fragile looks. They're tough out, and will take anything on in a steely silence!

I honestly couldn't tell you to be honest it was built up years ago but the crankset is nothing special something I grabbed from the spares box, similarly with the chain it's a cheap single speed specific but it was really good quality. I recall commenting at the time how I could put it on the motorbike. :D

This is Pled. They're a smooth, tough no nonsense mud addict. They chomp at the bit for off road action, and in fact reject smooth surfaces completely, as it gives them no challenge, and it is all about the challenge for Pled. Where as others might be blindly reckless, Pled floats over the rough stuff, constantly changing and shifting over the rough terrain, like a chess playing body building ballet dancer. They're not all brawn, but don't waste any time on niceties. They're out for a proper challenge, and won't get out of the shed for anything less.

Also it's hard to beat Terri as a name for an Orange Segment in fairness. But Pled is not like the other Oranges!

Let's change the question to "Where is your fridge?"
    'in the kitchen' :pac:
But seriously, I actually would have said either, it or she. Most likely it because I would have been annoyed at the question  but she if there was agenuine reason for it. For example, the fridge was missing from the kitchen when you walked in and you asked in a shocked manner, "where is the fridge gone?". I would then answer, "Don't worry, shes out back, we had to move her while remodellng/cleaning/whatever". I love our fridge, she's new and has an inverter, which I learned alot about in out freezer area in work and was fascinated to see them in regular household fridges. I call her Brian, after the Life of Brian.
Hmmm the green Genesis must be a Bruce surely as in Dr. Bruce Banner aka the incredible hulk!!!
My old race bike is called Bruce for this reason, it had bits of green through the design.

    Absolutely!

Alas no, Garrick went to another home sadly, as has Black Eagle. Midnighter disappeared one night, never to return.

They bring their calm, steady, level headedness to every situation, and don't get excited to easily - but like the terminator they're always back!

Tilly! Another dependable steed! Tilly is extremely low maintenance - they'll never ask for anything. They love being outside, earning the world go by, catching some rays (and rain - Tilly is all about balance!). Tilly is a truly outdoors soul, it's where they're happiest!
