With beef prices plummeting and farmers dumping milk in the UK will our Government or the EU do anything to help farmers? I know others have lost their jobs but beef farmers are actually losing Money.

The €100 million for beam that wasn't all claimed in my opinion wasn't a good look from the decision makers view.

at least we still have a outlet for our beef albeit at a bad price. that's being seen before.

if we get our payments as expected later in the year maybe we might count ourselves lucky with all the others fallout yet to be completely realised.

A sector that's getting nearly €2bn in subsidies/yr, it's difficult to claim poverty.

Thank God losing a job doesn't mean losing money...
    What an utterly ridiculous comment.

No I don’t think they will help. There’s too many cattle and too much supply beef and dairy. Over time farmers will realise this, get fed up of taking the hits, and quit farming. I think that’s what the government is hoping for any ways, and much as it’s a hard reality it’s true. We produce too much and the price doesn’t justify the costs and labour. The only question really is, how long will it take for that to dawn on farmers and for them to start packing it in.

Intervention is opened, or in the process of opening, for dairy product...thus, all will be grand!

The other farming systems don’t count, apparently...

Beef farms usually coincide with relatively Environmentally/biodiversity/carbon friendlier farming methods (compared to dairy). There’s an appetite in Europe to pay for this public service. I.e. Burren programme, pearl mussel project, hen harrier....I could go on and on.

Of course there’s not a peep of this out of the IFA because it might direct funds (where the big payments go) away from the bigger and more intensive farms.

While the market for beef might be volatile, the market for public goods and services is less so.

As for over-producing/high labour, I believe farmers would be free to tune their herd size to the natural capacity of their farms...

Everyone else only has a hard time.

The following clarifications on social welfare schemes were listed by the IFA:

Nobody is worried about beef. It’s a plentiful product.

Many small business will go to the wall. Likely while farms loose money they will struggle through.

Beef and dairy are fine on the big scale .. They are mostly local to their markets, and dont use a lot of manual labour. A lot of farm industry has been affected . Growers in UK are facing a lot of fruit rotting on trees this year ; dutch flower growers not picking their crops. Salads in southern europe that wont get migrants from africa to do work this year.

Imbalances in our food trade are likely to be higher issues. We might see some schemes to encourage more diversity in our crops local to us - within reason. More fresh greens for the table , however in the world of mega bailouts I assume that it will get redirected into yet another support for making industrial raw materials from churning up our fields.
