Fabia 1.0 mpi

    Hi all,

    Firstly, I know very little about cars so the below query might be a stupid one!

    I am buying a new car following an accident and as I had a 1.3 engine on my previous car I was looking to buy something around that size (1.2-1.4). I have viewed some Skoda Fabia cars online, which seem to be nice but the engine size is 1.0mpi.
    Someone said to me that the mpi means that it is stronger than a traditional 1.0 engine so a 1.0mpi could be the equivalent of a 1.2 or 1.3 car.
    I travel to work via 30 mins on motorways per day and am worried that travelling frequently at 100-120km/h might not be good for a 1.0 engine?

    Again, I know little about cars but just wanted some people's opinions on mpi cars with 1.0 engines - are they hairdryers or decent enough?

    Any opinions/info would be appreciated.

    No, thats the 1.0 tsi, its turbocharged and has more power. It would be the equivalent of a 1.2 or 1.4 from years ago but most engines are turbo charged now anyway.

    But even that engine wouldn’t be suited for your motorway commute. Have a look at the 1.4 tdi Fabias, that engine would suit you better.

    Whats your budget and what years are you looking at? I’m guessing you do about 30k km’s a year? The fabia isn’t a great start for a commute like yours if I’m honest.

    Mpi just means multipoint injection. It’s Skoda speak for basic engine version.

    For what it’s worth, the standard 1.0 isn’t dreadful, and it can do motorway speeds. I would get a more powerful engine for your usage though, be it bigger or turbocharged.

    A Skoda Yeti or an Octavia would be much better suited and more comfortable for your daily commute especially on the motorway.
    Have you got a budget OP and what is your total mileage every year?

    Just to be aware too, doing just a 30 mins commute each way is just about the worst driving you can do for a diesel with a DPF. I work about 30 minutes motorway drive from Galway city and know lots of people who have had to have the DPF cleaned and/or replaced.

    You're actually doing high mileage per day, and per year, which on the face of it is diesel territory. However, much of it is not at optimum operating temperature, and more soot is generated at this time, and you're doing it often.

    On a long journey, the car has time to get up to temperature, and then will either run hot enough to burn off the soot that has collected in the DPF, and may inject fuel into the exhaust to burn off this soot.

    If you do go diesel, a long run every few weeks will limit the likelihood of DPF issues.

    Nothing wrong with that budget. Loads of choice out there.

    Just shop around and find a car you like that will suit you.

    I'd have a look at the Seat Ibiza too, it's mechanically the same as the Fabia. This one has the 1.2 TSi engine which has a bit more power over the 1.0 litre found in most of the Fabias:

    Lots of diesel cars don’t have dpf’s and lots of modern diesels that do local mileage don’t give problems so to generalise is wrong, of course the opposite is also true but it really depends on each make, model, variant etc......... a 30 minute daily motorway spin is more than plenty to warm up a diesel to avoid the aforementioned common diesel problems

    Strange, that’s a 90 BHP, not 110. Still way better than the 60 but odd they’d say 110.

    For the record the diesel fabia is a noisy 3 pot beast and best avoided. Petrols are smooth and reliable. It was dropped years ago.

    1.0mpi is not turbocharged and I wouldn't get one for any motorway driving but it will do the job. I used a 1.2tsi which is turbocharged to commute 100km a day on motorway and it never missed a beat in 2.5 years. Today I use the octavia which is way nicer and a better motorway cruiser.
