    Hi,

Looking at upgrading my Network at home.

Currently, I have AC lite. I was going to buy the USG before this was announced but can see now that this is like an all in one package (USG, AP etc).

I was also going to by the AC Pro but might just go for this as I have the bottom of the house wired with cat6. So could just stick this in the living room and it would easily serve downstairs and can mesh it with AC lite upstairs.

Just wondering if anyone has one or is considering buying one?

I take it that I can mesh my AC lite with the UDM if I was to go this route?

I have the UDM, and I’m very happy with it.

I belive it supports mesh, but it’s not something I use.

Did you ever buy it BobbyT28? Would love to know how you are getting on.

I'm thinking of getting one, or perhaps one of the AmpliFI range, but not sure yet.

Not yet. I hear they might be bringing out a UDM-SE. Not in any rush to get it so might wait a bit and wait and see if this comes out.

I just finished my rack also tempted by the pro version but really need another AP so the UDM/SE meets those needs, so will wait for that.

Good to know about the UDM-SE, I'll look into that and see if I can find more info. I'm only starting to work on a network build for my house now. Spent last night pondering the vagaries of Fibre vs Cat 6 for home installs (Spoiler Cat 6 wins) :)

Fibre for a home setup is OTT if you ask me. Ran Cat6 around the house about 6 years ago and best thing I ever did. 6 years later I finished Network cab. 😂😂

Yeah if you can hold out if you can. The beauty with this is, they are saying that the ports are POE. Time will tell if that's through. Again, the rumor mill has stopped recently so not sure when we with if ever see it. I'm hoping before the end of the year.

If people are renovating and will have a centralised comms cab, good to get single mode fiber from the point of entry to that cab should they not be in the same location. Handy for FTTH to bring light from the ODP to the comms cab so the ONT is powered in the comms cab

Still think it's OTT for the average enthusiast.

CAT 6 in a home environment is plenty enough. Suppose if you were transferring huge data from one location in the house to another etc then maybe 1 run of it.

Not really about speed one run up to a comms cab, more about a clean install :)

I've just bought up a Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro (in the US, hopefully heading this way in a while). Should be a nice replacement to the edgerouter x and a separate ubnt controller

Can I ask why you went with the Pro vs the UDM? I don't need the cameras aspect so I ended up going back to the UDM (Plus 1 other AP). Looks like a great piece of kit either way.

I already have a UniFi wifi setup so didn't need another wifi device so that's why I didn't go for the UDM when it came out.
Why the pro? I've notions about future proofing should I want to replace my older IP cameras. I want to replace the Edgerouter X, while it does the job, the config is a pig and while its working now, I dare not to touch it as I've too many people relying on it for me to 'tinker' around with it.
Having it rack mount is important also for my setup. I'm already using SFP+ modules in another device for a building to building 10g link so hopefully this can also take up that job too.
I could have easily bunged in a UDM instead of a UDM-Pro but I'd have less to play around with :)

    Good to know, thank you.

I'm going to pull the trigger on the UDM this week with luck. I noticed they have a WiFi 6 AP in the early access store so I might wait and see if I can get that added to the order. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

    @Static M.e.
How did u get on with it ?? Im very interested in getting it also.
Have u noticed the difference ? was it difficult to set up ?

Very easy to setup, the UI app is decent and once you get internal webpage up and running it's seamless. It's definitely better coverage. I'll update the other thread as I go along to keep it all in one place.

Great, I think I might just pull the trigger on this. Are you meshing it with a AP? I have the ACLite so want to set it up with that.

Not yet but I plan to get an AP soon. I didn't want to get too much hardware too quickly in case i didnt like it.

Any questions or if you want me to check anything, feel free to ask

Thinking of one of these myself, trying to figure out what is best set up for my own home.

Looking at prices though, these seem to be significantly cheaper buying direct from unifi with free delivery or am I missing something silly?

    Thanks

Is that the price before Tax?

I think they get shipped from the US (happy to be corrected) so you might get stung with import duty/tax.

I got a UDM-Pro last week, takes over from a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X for my router/gateway/VLANs & a Ubiquiti UniFi Controller Cloud Key to admin the APs. Once setup, this has been a pleasure to use. Gives me easy insight into devices on my network I didn't have before :) ...now if I could only get a GPON SFP to work with Eir's FTTH ;)
Why the UDM-Pro over the UDM - I didn't need another AP and liked the idea that I would have more ports to play with and an option of moving over to their security cameras in the future if wanted.

Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X & a Ubiquiti UniFi Controller Cloud Key coming up for sale soon :D

OP: Did the UDM come with UK plug? last time I looked EU store shipping with EU plug only.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭BobbyT28

I’m really split on what to do get a UDM or the UDM Pro. I have a rack so pro would fit nicely but I don’t think I will ever use UDM protect as using synology for cameras. But I would like to also have the SFP of the UDM pro as eir could roll out FTTH and I could maybe use that. Again this is down the road so not sure what to do. I’m holding off and holding off but how long do I wait 😂😂

I need another AP so UDM looks like a perfect fit!

    Decisions decisions

Anyone else in the same boat?

it came with a eu plug. its just a figure 8 plug which you more than likely have one spare.

From what I gather, you will still need to use their ONT unless someone knows a way around this?

Me again!! Considering the UDM again, one question is there a stand/mount like this one for the echo that the UDM would fit in? Where I want to put it doesn’t have a shelf near by and this would be perfect.

Not that I am aware of, and not directly through U...you could consider getting one of those floating shelves that attach to you wall. We have used one from IKEA before and while they won't take a lot of weight, they would hold up a UDM if secured right.
