Bit of an odd one

Just wondering if anyone has any advice

The first part of the story is we were due to travel to Mallorca last September, the weather promised so bad (and it was) I ended up cancelling the holiday the day before and changing to Portugal. Not before ringing the hotels (We had 3 booked). Two of them had free cancellation but the third, on our booking said non refundable. I rang them and the lady on the phone said it was just the first night but they would refund the rest. So I emailed them asking to cancel and for refund and got an email back from someone else saying the booking was non refundable and I wasn’t getting a cent back.

Long and short of it, the initial person made a mistake but they gave me a voucher to use for the full amount, before May this year. Great!.

We re booked for End of April and now obviously we can’t travel.

I emailed the hotel again today basically saying it’s looking like we might not be able to travel and could we possibly stretch it out until maybe September this year.

Got an email back saying out of office and then someone else emailed me asking for my arrival date and booking reference. Sent those back and got a reply “Thanks, got that”

Next email was a “Booking Cancellation” generic emailing stating we cancelled our booking.

I emailed back saying, “I just see you’ve cancelled our booking, what happened?”

And that’s where the conversation stopped.

I’m just being dubious, but are they trying to pull a fast one or what’s going on?

We have travel insurance but I’m not sure whether that covers Corona virus, but that’s another story.

    Any help/advice appreciated.

Just an update, they emailed back today offering me to re book with them. I asked for a refund and they just replied “ We can offer a new modification waiting for your kind reply”

Seems unlikely that they would give a cash refund for a voucher booking.

See That’s where I’m looking for the grey area. I did pay for initially so it can hardly be considered a voucher. They want me to re book with no idea of when it’s going to open, or a guarantee that they will open.

You booked something that you weren't entitled to any refund on though. Admittedly someone on the phone told you otherwise when you had decided to cancel but the voucher itself was issued entirely out of good will. Getting a transfer is not a bad deal

Oh ya to be fair I’m happy with that end, just apprehensive of how long this whole thing is going to go on for. I suppose no more than anyone is.

I’ll buzz them tomorrow and see what they say.

    Thanks
