I am looking for a little device that I can stick on the wall in the toilet that alarms me when the light is on for longer than 5 minutes.

This is simple technology, but I cannot find anything on the internet that is a consumer product.

I just need it because the kids constantly leave the light on in the toilet.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks, and stay safe.

Get a PIR and install it in the toilet, set it to turn off after x amount of time.

    Something like this

No but what you're looking for makes little sense when the likes of a PIR would turn a light off automatically after a set time.

    This is your issues

"I just need it because the kids constantly leave the light on in the toilet."

This issue is resolved with a PIR

Kids will not turn off the light and it will just stress you out, get the PIR so you don’t have to spend you life fighting with them

Is the lamp an LED? (if you are worried about cost then it should be anyway)

Assuming a 10W LED, on for 24 hours a day 365 days per year.

    total kWh is 10 x 24 x 365 / 1000 = 87.6 kWh (units)

Assume 20c per unit (and you should be paying less if you shop around) annual running cost is just €17.52

That is IF the lamp is never turned off ALL YEAR, not just left on the odd night.

I am not sure if there are any commercial devices that will alarm if exposed to light for a five minutes, but I imagine such devices would also alarm with sunlight triggering the sensor?

But I dont want to use a PIR, because I need rewire the toilet light.

All I want is a little device that beeps if it has detected light for longer than 5 minutes.

    https://www.amazon.com/Refrigerator-Closing-Warning-Detector-Assembled/dp/B00QYJ3UI0

That one is only good for 50 seconds, but perhaps something similar?

    Holy $hit????

You wont need to rewire the toilet light anymore than if you were to install a replacement light (with an inbuilt PIR), installing what you are suggesting is basically ridiculous, cant think of any other way to put it.
You want a device to beep if the light is left on for 5 minutes, its ridiculous, you are going to have to either have a power supply or keep replacing batteries for this device?? its going to annoy you and you could just get a PIR where it turns off the light automatically, so Im honestly not sure if you are serious???
I dont normally reply to these kind of posts anymore but Im making an exception.

Amazon do small PIR you can stick on, battery jobs, you could put them on.....

I personally don’t see the point in device that beeps, the light still stays on

Go buy a smart bulb from Ikea with the PIR.

The PIR is battery powered so you dont have to rewire and the bulb just plugs in.

It only works when the light is on so if they leave it on it just goes off after 5 mins. Otherwise if they turned it off its off. :)

I have them in my storage cupboards so that they just turn off after 2 mins.

    as suggested by afatbollix

you will of course need to also get a suitable tradfri lamp that suits your existing fitting.
