Thatched Roof

Have been offered an old cottage in a (very) rural location for quite small money. Only problem is that it needs complete renovation (it’s practically collapsed). Thing is, it was thatched, as there are small remnants of the old roof remaining.
Does anyone know, if I was to restore this cottage as a holiday home, would the thatched roof have to be reinstated, or could I put a slate roof on it?
Someone told me that there’s a register of thatched buildings in the country and that they have to be kept thatched. Is this true?
