I have used the guide where you

    Create folder in windows
In VB settings, select it in sharing and automount
    Boot up the Ubuntu instance
No sign of the folder on my desktop or home directories on the Ubuntu instance.

Using VB 6.1. Tried downgrading to VB 6.0 but still not seeing the folder.

Don't bother with VirtualBox. Use "Windows Subsystem for Linux", it's seamlessly integrated.

Also: Windows 10 ships with Hyper-V built-in, just enable it in the Apps and Programs. Hyper-V has seamless integration with Windows, for obvious reasons.

Have a look at VB Guest Additions:

I gather you're trying to set up shared folders between your primary OS and a VM. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualBox/SharedFolders
