Looking for a quick steer here. Looking at a cheap 4WD for an off road hack around the farm for my dad. Will be completely off road but nothing strenuous up and down farm roadways and in around a few fields. Nothing worse than a few muddy gates/gaps to get through really
Couple of query's really looking at some petrol Suzuki's on donedeal. Looking at petrol in that usage as it will be all short hops (even though diesel available on farm)
The jimny have separate 4wd do all the 1.6 petrol Vitara come with 4WD
The vitaras can be picked up cheaper than the jimnys is there a particular reason
Any other 4wd that you would recommend
    Budget around the 1k mark

Jinny’s are very good off road but are rarer and in more demand.

Pretty sure all older Vitaras are 4wd.

They’re probably a really good choice for what you need.

    Thanks Colm

Would any of the older soft roaders have enough of a 4WD system to do the job.
See a few older petrol RAV 4's and Honda CRV's (not sure what type of 4WD system they have)

Or if going back to the early 00's diesels would they have the same level of DPF issues that modern diesels have if only tipping around e.g. see a few Nissan Xtrails 2.2d in budget

None of them would have the low ratio box for a start.

You won’t have DPF on most older diesels but you still have a lot of stuff to go wrong relative to a petrol.

An old, manual, non-turbo Subaru (Forester) could be good as well. Their 4WD is quite capable and these versions come with an additional low gearbox as well.

The extra lever between gear shifter and handbrake ...that's the low gear lever

disadvatages...they drink and tax is quite high.

Thanks Peasant will not be on the road at all so tax not an issue and milage will be tiny really. The forester might be a decent shout will keep an eye out for one. The legacy might struggle on the ground clearance part

    Legacy Outback?

Might be an outsider but the Pajero Junior is worth a look, they have a Hi-Low box with a 2WD mode and are very capable off road , can be got in budget too though they are starting to get scarce, i know a few farmers locally using them.

If it's diesel your going for you want something pre common rail diesel... If petrol you've already answered your own question, A 1.6 Vitara.

If it does not need to have a big engine or be a big car then a Daihatsu Terios maybe. It has a 1.5 litre petrol engine and were very capable off road.

    I always liked them myself.

Also it could be driven on the road if you want too.

    One question.
Who is going to service and maintain this field car?

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

They start, stop, go forwards and backwards. No DPF that i'm aware of and reasonably capable off road.

That's exactly what they don't need in the yard.

And why is that? I’ve owned them and they work fine. My last one is doing the exact same job the op is after.

Your right about one thing, they stop... Alot.

I'd go for a Jimny or pajero jnr. this would be a lot of fun for little money https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/1997-mitsubishi-pajero-junior-lynx-1-1-petrol/24351592

Bit more money but it has a lot of offroad mods, you may get it cheaper without trailer https://www.adverts.ie/car/suzuki/jimny/suzuki-jimny/19905680.

standard 4x4 with road tyres will get stuck easy in the mud, this one would go anywhere

For running costs, reliability and ease of maintenance OP go with the jimny. Put AT tyres on it and it will go anywhere a defender will unless you're driving through a lake. Easy to service yourself and I've seen examples that haven't been serviced in years and still run fine.

Just check for rust before buying one, they are known for it. Hotspots are under the boot well where the jack is kept, behind the headlights under the bonnet and floor under drivers side. Do not buy one if it has rust, it's an nct fail and not cheap to sort. Before I bought my one I had looked at 3 previously and all had rust in one place or another.

They are a great little yoke though and not to shabby at towing some light trailer loads around a farm.

A very cheap one with a bit of rust would probably do as well?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Wailin

Oh of course if it's just for around the farm.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Keeping a look out on done deal for something once lockdown is over. Basic service we can do ourselves and our local ag mechanic will do anything more technical. Only a mile up the road and can transport on our own trailer.
