    Hi Folks,
Recently returned from UK & had my car off road for the past year while I was there. Was not aware I had to declare it off road. Kept insurance up while away. Now have to tax car & saying I must pay arrears. Had heard I could transfer ownership to family member & back to me & that way would only have to pay tax from now? Just wondering is this true & would it take long or effect my insurance?

    Thanks

Yes you can transfer to get rid of tax. I cannot see it having much effect on your car insurance other than you not being able to drive your car until it is transferred back to your name.

Why did you pay car insurance when you were not driving the car?

You can transfer ownership to yourself.
It is possible for two people with the same name to live in the same house .

    This.
I’ve heard of a few people doing this.

Would it not flag as suspicious transferring the car to another & then transferring it back to myself again?

Do it to yourself, add your middle initial to the new name.

Only downside is that your registration certificate will show one extra owner.

How much is the tax arrears? Do you plan on keeping the car for a long time? If you transfer it to someone, and then back, aren't you adding two owners to the list? Just wondering is it worth it to save the tax.

transfer the ownership to someone with an insurable interest in it (such as a Partner) and you won't have to transfer it back.
There will be no comebacks, no one will be suspicious, this is what the Tax Office will tel you to do,

SO long as it has been genuinely off the road it won't be a problem
