A good quality, new battery will last for many, many camping trips, unless you're headed for faraway parts with a lot of lecky being used onboard.

The main pitfalls are people putting new batteries in parallel with old batteries, and not wiring them correctly, using too small / different sized cables all of the above can lead to one / a subset of the batteries supplying and accepting the majority of the charge. There is a simulated model on here somewhere that demonstrates why.

If you're adding lots of storage go for 6v cells in series and then parallel as required.
