APT replacement with single backbox digital

There's been a number of threads about the old APT timers but most of the digital replacements seem to be quite a bit longer and may not fit in the original area, at least not without a bit of hacking.

I was wondering if there are recommeded digital timers that would just be a swap out fit. I did look about a bit and I did find a Sangamo timer that looks pretty good. But it may depend on how bodged the original is. In my case it a backbox that's been partially tiled into with a fuse box beside it.

It's a bit squashed looking, which is why I'm wondering if the new one will fit in there...

Looking closely, I can now see that whoever installed this tiled under the left and bottom but flush-to on the top. Thus the timer is supported left+bottom and nowhere else. Then he tightened the screws until the plastic cracked (which you can just see at the top left, in a bit). Super.

When I loosed the screws a bit, the timer noise doesn't couple half as badly to the next room (the reason I wanted to replace it). I bet there's a market for an "APT silencer", a rubber gasket that would go around the edge ;)

I think the answer seems to be that that digital timer is 87x87mm so will go in but there's be a nice gap on one side which I can fill with silicone or grout...

Why not use a Hive, receiver box is same size as your APT

Tech: Thanks for the reply! Nice and neat installation there - not a gouged mess of plasterboard like mine is. I was about to go and buy one when I realised that everywhere is closed now. Probably do it online but sure it'll wait.

DGOBS: I would have liked something which was RF - replace the timer and then have the controller somewhere else - but not going as far as a Hive! Besides my apt is small and there's only a few rads. At this time of year, 90% of the time I'm turning on and off manually

The pipe off my brother's boiler decided to detach on Friday morning at 5am. The copper goes into the ceiling and than must connect to a right angle joint, possibly to plastic pipe at that point. That joint detached. Any issues I was having are nothing compared to what that did!

I'm just saying this because with the current stay-at-home restrictions going on, I'd highly recommend everyone to go and find all your water stopcocks and gas valves and make sure you can turn them off! I've now discovered I can't turn off the down pipe to my immersion - the stopcock is jammed full open. That's not great in a shared apt building!

The only issue I have with it is that its only 3 programs a day, but the bost botton is very handy!

i like stuff to be neat and tidy! and always labeled!
