Yes you can but there is a 50c charge for each cash lodgement https://www.anpost.com/Money/Current-Account/Fees

thanks for the reply, do you also happen to know if you need to use the debit card in an atm first to activate it, that's something that may not be possible because of the obvious covid issues right now

Looks like you just have to call a number: https://www.anpost.com/Money/Current-Account/How-to-Open-an-Account

Once it's activated via that phone call, the first transaction will almost certainly involve the PIN. This addresses the issue of the card going 'missing' in the post. So if she tries to tap in the shop, it will tell her to insert it into the machine and type in her PIN. After that she can then tap.

What are the 'obvious covid issues' which prevents her from using the card in an ATM? If she has to enter her PIN into a retail machine, that's not much different to pressing buttons on an ATM.

Well the obvious covid issues are the fact that if she had the virus without any symptoms she could easily transfer it onto the ATM, which is a very public machine that many people use throughout the day. There is also a risk of catching the virus from the ATM as many other people would have used it pushing buttons and the like and i'm fairly certain not all people wash their hands correctly/at all. Thought it would be fairly self explanatory.

As for entering the PIN that is something we want to avoid, hence why we're looking into creating this account, to use contactless.

I don't know about the An Post card but a BoI debit card has to be put into the machine and your PIN manually entered at least once every 5 transactions. That also applies in theory to the Revolut (virtual) debit card you use with your smartphone but you can reset the TX counter in the Revolut app.

    What about an AIB account?

You wouldn't have to pay the 5euros an post monthly feee if she opened an account for people aged 66 or over.

Plus you could make your lodgements at the post office.
