I posted here a few weeks ago and just wondering if anyone would have any suggestions for me...

A few weeks ago I was on the motor way coming home and just before my exit the car just wouldn't accelerate at all... I had my foot to the floor and it wouldn't accelerate,no power at all, and the revs weren't moving.... so I let the car crawl up the slip road then when I got to the top, I dropped her down into second gear but the car would hardly move for me... It was like it was almost going to cut out and was a bit jumpy, then all of a sudden the power came back.

I sent her into the mechanics and he thought it was a dirty fuel filter so got a full service done on her. Bought her home and the same thing happened on my way home (so this rules out the dirty fuel filter as it happened again even with a new filter in) This time black smoke was coming out of the tail pipe and there was a strong smell of diesel the revs or nothing move when I try to accelerate. The only thing that fixes the issue is coming to a stop and starting up again. It's only happening to me when driving straight roads at about 80-100km.

I have her booked in to go back to the mechanics for a closer inspection but he can't look at it until Friday. I've to get to work every day which is half an hour away and I'm really worried about this issue. Would anyone have any ideas what it could be?

    TIA

Hi Tia, is your car a 1.4 D4D or a 2.0 D4D? Have you had any issues on start up, did the mechanic mention anything about fault codes?

Could also possibly be seized brake calipers. Worth getting the brakes checked over

1.4 d4d he plugged it in and no fault codes, also there are no start up issues

Fuel pump issue quite possible, you could turn ignition off and start it in gear while moving, obviously on a straight and say on 3rd or 2nd drop the clutch in turn off and ignition back on release clutch....

Thanks for the reply. I'm not all that clued up on cars so what would this do if you don't mind me asking

It's obviously not great to do it all the time but until you get fault fixed it means you won't have to stop, power loss may still be down slightly.

That's obviously if it's fuel pump issue.

Had exactly this on the Mondeo, you could feel the loss, no matter what you did with the pedal, knock it off, give it a second or 2 then turn key so lights are on dash, do t try to actually start with key, won't work anyway, then let clutch out with car in gear, don't do at very high speed, the car will jump itself back to life....

Thanks for that... Some people I've spoken to think it could be an egr valve issue... I know I won't know until mechanic looks at it but I'm trying to get ideas

Yeah it's a tough one to know.
    Hopefully your mechanic can sort.

    Black smoke is unburnt fuel.

Is there any boost leaks? Hissing noise slight to large loss of power. Limp mode being triggered when the car is driven hard or under constant load such as being driven uphill or being driven at motorway speeds. Things like the MAF and egr valve should be checked too.

The car losing all power is most likely it going into limp mode. Turning it off/on again resets this. Hence your power briefly returns.

The metering valve on the pump can give some trouble on the 1.4 diesels without showing a fault code. If it is stuck it may not allow fuel through and which would cause it to go down in power or cut back.

Hard to know for certain without a fault code or testing the pump.

Thanks .. could it be the egr valve like I said previously? If I pull over and start the car again it's brand new again.. No smoke, no diesel smell, and runs like normal like it's reset Itself again... It happened to me again this evening and now my engine light has come on which is a

Should log a fault code for egr or air mass if it goes into limp home mode. The engine malfunction light should come on if the fault occurs after a few drives when a fault code is stored

More than likely it's the accelerator position sensor. It's a common problem on them. It's located on the pedal itself.
My friend has the same problem as you. For the last 18 months he dips the clutch and turns off the ignition and starts it again while moving and away he goes. Not the safest thing to do. He borrowed a sensor from a friend and it solved it.

Take off the egr unit, detach solenoid from rectangular chamber and blow it out, followed by a can of cleaner. Clean the solenoid valve face also.

On a 2006 car when something like this goes fixing it is likely a waste of time. Just ditch it or flog for scrap on DD and buy a replacement. Simplest option.

You'd scrap a car for the sake of an egr valve?

As mentioned, the car seems to be going into a limp home strategy with reduced power. Unlikely to be EGR related, as cycling the ignition key would not fix a stuck open EGR, besides which the symptoms the OP is describing aren't typical of a faulty EGR. You would still have pedal response, car would be underpowered and maybe grey smoke.
OP I am very surprised you don't have fault codes given your symptoms, but I suspect its a fuel related issue. Injectors and suction control valves are known culprits on 1.4 D4D.
If you haven't got the fault fixed, I would suggest a fresh set of eyes on this problem.

Wonder if its the injector seals. These usually leak a bit with age
