Software for cataloging pictures

I have thousands of raw picture files, I wish to catalogue them so I can find say all the pictures of a place or subject say sunsets or my cat. I need to be able to assign key words and then search for pictures using these keywords. I have been using Adobe Bridge both to assign keywords and other metadata but it is slow…

I have been using Adobe Bridge both to assign keywords and other metadata but it is slow also I don’t use adobe Photoshop or Lightroom preferring Capture NX .

I would welcome advice on programs that could be used.
