short phrases

Do they work? I'm talking about things like "Grow Up", "Man Up", or "Toughen Up". I've always been curious how telling someone a two word phrase is supposed to enable them to do the thing the person telling wants them to do.

Would it not be better to say "you're behaving in a feeble or immature way because X"? That would be better for the person receiving it instead of shouting abuse.

There's nothing like saying a slightly patronizing 'calm down' to someone utterly serene and rational to spark fury. It's best saved for an over-the-shoulder-insouciant parting shot, as one blithely exits.

I'm ashamed to say I occasionally employed the tactic to annoy my mother when I was a bratty teenager. It never failed, to my absolute shame. Direct hit, every time.

Similarily

and

“don’t”

with the less evil but equally menacing - ‘don’t go there’

Tone and context is everything - 3 words can speak volumes.

Run like **** is also pretty universal to induce panic.
