Noise transmission from TV attached to shared chimney

    Hi all,
I've been ignoring this issue for a while but the neighbours have a television in their bedroom which is mounted to the shared solid block chimney structure. The noise from the TV comes right through to what should be our main bedroom.

The house is a semi-detached timber frame construction with the chimney structure in the middle between the two homes.

Based on my research so far it seems the chimney and solid block construction acts as an amplifier of sorts for the TV. Downstairs the chimney is surrounded by a plasterboard assembly but upstairs it's just the solid block, no plasterboard.

We plan on having a friendly chat to see if they'd be willing to remove the TV from the wall but, if they won't do so, any tips on what we can to mitigate the issue?

Don’t bother, they won’t, might say they did but won’t and then fall out. I’d put insulated plasterboard and additional skin of plasterboard is what I’d do and if it didn’t I would put in ufh insulation on wall then plasterboard.

Fair point. It'd be a very awkward conversation either way and, considering they've kids and are trying to keep them occupied without regular school days, I have sympathy for them.

UFH - is this underfloor heating insulation? Would you go for a some form of specialist acoustic plasterboard or acoustic mineral wool underneath plasterboard?

This might make me sound stupid but I suppose I'm looking at, basically building a frame around the chimney to hold all of this, and losing about 4 inches of the room there? Would that be about right?

I was just looking at it from a cheap and cheerful cost point of view tbh. But stud it out better idea, but you need an insulation behind boards in between studs.

Yep, and it makes sense to try and keep the cost down. It might well be enough to stop the noise but I wonder would it better to just go the whole hog and be done with it.
