This is the last place on earth to come I suspect, when it comes to getting motoring sense......and I mean that in the best possible way!

I love cars, like most here (I imagine). I have been driving a 2012 VW CC the last (almost) 4 years. After an initial outlay to put a few things right, it is currently in super condition, inside and out. I still like the car, its looks and how it drives.

However, shock horror, I've had a hankering to change. The only snag is that I really, in truth, don't have a massive need for a car. I drive a couple of miles to get the bus to work and same on the way home. Weekends it gets used but not overly. Almost 4 years of ownership, I've put around 10k miles on it!
Not looking for opinions on usage as I know petrol would be better and this type of driving is not good for diesel etc.

I want to change to a BMW 640d gran coupe - I just love 'em! A 2012 - 2014 would cost around EUR20-25k. My own will probably get me EUR8k at a push. I have the money (luckily) to make up the difference but am I mad to change???!!!!

Do I hold off given there's maybe EUR3k more to depreciate from my own car over the next 2-3 years but more significant depreciation on the 640 over the same period. I want a 640....end of.....but do I hold off and fetch one, albeit older, at a lower price?

Devil and Angel scenario - every second day I'm decided - I'll hang on to the CC....next day, no, no, life's too short etc, throw caution to the wind, get and enjoy the 640!!!

    Thoughts??!
    Thanks All

U need to buy the car you will enjoy driving. Its only money at the end of the day.

If you're in a financial position to buy it, and it's the car you want, I say go for it. Life is too short, you might as well enjoy yourself.

I was in a very similar position over a year ago, had a nice and sensible diesel that was costing me nothing. But I had lost the joy in driving. Decided to put some money into changing and bought something less sensible, but much more enjoyable to drive. No regrets, very happy with the decision, now I go for drives again purely for enjoyment.

A 640d or in fact any diesel is not the car for you if you are only doing 2.5k per annum

Agree with this. Get one with a petrol engine.

Have you driven a 640d gran coupe?
If not get a test drive and see if you still want one.
Just remember they were 100k plus when new and when older are massively more expensive to maintain than a VW Passat derivative like the CC.
I think they area lovely looking machine still but It’s one thing buying the car and another keeping it on the road if things go wrong.

I agree with Mick,I was mad after one a couple years ago but just too expensive but I don’t think they have aged well, even the 2 door looks ancient

I get the attraction of the 640 GC, they are still a very cool looking car so if you want one just buy one.
However I have always liked them and went looking at a few last year but found them heavy and far to wide to consider as a sporty type of car. I ended up in a 435 gran coupe with the same engine and absolutely loved it but have since sold that on too.
Seriously though, if it’s a car you really want I’d buy it, life is short as we all know.

Why not get a Skoda Rapid instead?

If you have the cash then splash but any car for a few miles is a bit nuts. Is there anything else you would rather invest in like holidays, hobbies, building a nan cave in the back garden.??

Thanks for everyones views - all very relevant.

Having giving it further thought, I'm going to sit tight for now. It has been mentioned here already that the price of the 6 is rather spicy!, and given I do so little driving overall, it just doesn't make sense. I do still really like them but reckon I should hold off.
My own CC is performing well and it's best to hold on to her. Truthfully, the money should be better spent/saved elsewhere.
This virus situation doesn't help either so spending probably not the brightest idea right now.

P.S. Yes, could certainly invest in other things - hobbies or otherwise
P.S.S. "go back to the 8er" I think was the quote!! Hee hee!!! How I loved that 840!!! Didn't half cost me mind and I lost my you know wots when it came time to selling it on!!! Ah well - still provides me with wonderful memories!!!

    .............I'll still have a 6'er mind!!
    Thanks All!

I was reading along the Op just thinking, DONT! until i got to the 640 gc bit, a mate wants to import one, sterling gone weak again. reckon you can have a good one landed for 20k...

    https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?sort=price-asc&postcode=ls298jn&radius=1500&make=BMW&model=6%20SERIES%20GRAN%20COUPE&price-from=9500&price-to=20000&fuel-type=Petrol

    the petrol options there...

the biggest cost by a mile will be depreciation, if the savings from uk are substantial, there is one big cost avoided...

someone mentioned an 8 series? did you have one Op? if doing virtually no mileage, I think they are very attractive car to own potentially, cost of fuel irrelevant with low mileage. They are appreciating if anything and the E31 about to qualify for classic tax of E56! one went for about 5k sterling on ebay the other day, from a very reputable seller. the VRT calulator doesnt have the E31 on it...

Just looked there, wouldnt be paying anything like the irish prices, do that and try sell it the next day or even better, a year later and see what you get for it. Its the car I would pick up, but via import and hold onto it a few years... if you do very low mileage, would a 530e be of interest?
