Is anyone else a bit worried of having to physically go in to the post office this week to collect their payment? Would it not be prudent to offer people to pay them via online banking for the forseeable future?

Not realistic how many people are on JSA/SW payments? Hundreds of thousands? A million or more?

On top of all the work they do, they'd have to write to everybody confidentially asking for their bank details?

    Not feasible,

If you are worried about visiting the post office during the week/next few weeks, you can nominate a Temporary Agent (a person you've given permission to collect your payment).

Just go to the post office, wear mask/gloves if you must, keep your distance.

You can have it paid to your bank account now. Just ring an ask for a form to be sent to you.

People applying for the new emergency payment are being asked for their IBAN.

Should I go for this? what are the chances they'll move us back to collecting from the Post Office in a few months?

thinking of moving banks in the next while, after charges were announced,

I think you should why not? I assume it will go back to physical collections when this blows over. Isnt it a way of checking if your in the country and not working. The physical act of appearing, signing and collecting. Your only exposing yourself to risk needlessly going to a cramped post office.

    Check this out:
    https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/covid19_and_social_welfare.html

"If you are unable to collect your payment from the post offices due to illness or self-isolation, you can:

Leave your social welfare payment at the post office until you can collect it yourself

Nominate a temporary Agent to collect your payment. You can get a form for appointing a temporary Agent on the An Post website.

Ask the DEASP to transfer your payment to your bank account".

  • Hmm it's says only if you're sick but I get the feeling they'll be happy to oblige even if you're not. Also with AIB though and was thinking of moving to EBS to avoid the new charges. Decisions, decisions....

Stupid question. For those on JSA, where do I find the "office dealing with your payment"? What does that mean exactly?
I think that must be your nearest Intreo Centre (but they also ask for the post office that's most convenient for you).

That’s your local SW office. Google “SW office in Ballygobackwards” and it should shout up.

It's the office where you sign on.

If it is AIB you're with, like myself, they have suspended their plans to bring in charges:

Gonna press ahead with getting my payment into my bank account now.
