Connecting monitor to laptop

    Connecting a screen to laptop in order to work from home.
    Need 2 screens , but need different programmes on each screen.
    By just connecting the monitor , I am getting identical on both laptop and 2nd screen.
    How do we change this to view different items per screen ?

    right click on desktop > display settings >multiple displays, set this to "extend these display"
