Garden Plant ID

Hello folks, first time posting here, and know very little about gardening or garden plants. I've just moved to a new house, and have lots of trees, shrubs, flowers etc all around the bourder of my garden. Ill have lots of questions for you in the coming weeks, reguarding plants and how best to look after them.

So firstly, can someone ID this plant please, and give me advise on pruning etc thanks?

Best pruned late autumn when leaves have fallen. Cut it right back hard each year.

The flowering can be extended by cutting off the older flower heads as they go to seed. It encourages the plant to put more energy into new flowers rather than trying to make seeds. The general advice is to cut them back hard but I don't really bother and they still seem to grow away fine except for the odd one that gets blown over.

Buddlia is really tough, so if you want to tidy it up you can cut it back as hard as you like even at this time of the year. The flowers might be a bit later but you won’t lose them. Autumn is usually the time to cut back as the old flowers are untidy and because it’s shallow rooted it can be wind rocked and damaged in the winter storms but it doesn’t mind being cut back at this time of year.

Ah i suppose autumn for wind-rock prevention but mine is in fairly sheltered position.

Could anyone tell me the name of these plants and is there just one species that comes in lots of different flowering colours or are there a number of species & lots of colours for each.

Also when planted around what month do they flower and how long do the flowers stay on them before dropping off? Does the height of the plant then go back to the ground over winter or is it still a tall stalk with no flowers during that season (sorry if thats an amateur gardener question)

Delphinium. Many varieties and colours. Flower late May to July depending on variety and location. How long flowers last depends on the weather. They are perennials and die back fully in late autumn to come again next year.

Thanks Jim, will look them up. Do you know are there any varieites that are known to keep flowers longer than others? And in a good summer how long might they keep flowers, like could it go into mid/late September or are they gone a good while at that point? I like them and everything but just trying to avoid plants that flower for a few weeks and then they're gone till the next year

They only flower for a couple of weeks. You can try cutting the faded flowers and stems back for a later flush of flower but it's never successful for me.

If you are interested Lidl have Blue Delphinium for sale at the moment - though I have had issues with Lidl plants before, the ones I saw today looked ok, if a bit thirsty.

A few had flowers just coming out, rest were well on green bushy plants that I am sure would flower fairly soon, however they would be better next year when planted. (I was at the Lidl in Nutgrove, but I am sure they will be at any of the big stores that do plants).
