It is not closed. Some areas are regulated with high delays due staffing shortage.

The Spanish PM has declared a state of emergency, and the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has advised against all but essential travel to some areas of Spain. Jet2 will be predominately full of holiday makers, non-essential, and reliant on Jet2 to get them home should further bans be announced.

Though it's not clear what new information they got this morning after departure.

There's now a wave of departures to Spain presumably going out to repatriate passengers, rocketing up to FL400/FL410. Impressive response by Jet2 managing acting so quickly.

For Jet2 this might make sense as I would guess that 99% of their passengers are British. However the same would not be true at Ryanair who would have a much higher percentage of Spanish travelling with them even from holiday destinations. So turning back and cancelling outbound flights would strand Spanish here.

Are jet2 not a travel agent or accommodation provider aswell? I flew with aer lingus to Malaga this morning and the flight was delayed due to something with Spanish air traffic control. 89 on the flight and most were Spanish including a large group of school kids

    Jet2 do package holidays, yes.

Lots of delays through multiple parts of Spanish airspace today including the Canaries, down to to staffing issues due COVID19, likely the cause of your delay.
