So my renewal quote for the lowest risk category couple driving Mondeo Estate 2004, under 5000k per year, clean everything has gone up 12%. I went to Liberty for an option and here is their response.......

Good Morning. Thank you for contacting Liberty Insurance. My name is James. How can I help you today?

So I have a quote for my motor insurance which is only TPFT no Fully Comp. Why? We are the lowest risk category and have home and boats to insure too.

Can I ask for your policy reference or vehicle registration number please so I can check this for you?

Stephen Unfortunately, we would not be able to offer you Comprehensive cover due to the age and value of your vehicle, I'm afraid. We would only offer Third Party, Fire and Theft cover on it.

So where is the break point? It is a well maintained car in perfect condition however I understand the algorithm will ignore this fact

Based on the value, unfortunately it falls outside of our acceptance criteria for comprehensive quote Stephen.

You just said it was the age and now you say its the value?? Which is it?

I need to know what to buy going forward so I dont waste my money!

Sorry Stephen yes due to the age and value of your vehicle, I'm afraid We would only offer Third Party, Fire and Theft cover on it.

So you will not tell me where the Fully Comp will be effective?? That is very odd.

Stephen unfortunately we cant offer fully comprehensive.

So if I go and buy a new car you will not offer me a quote for fully comp? Or you want me to keep filling in quote forms until I find out myself where the point is where you will actually offer fully comp. Can you see how perverse that is?

Stephen if you change your car midterm on your policy with Liberty Insurance and it meets our acceptance criteria we will review comprehensive cover.

Great - all we need to know is what are the criteria - but you will not release that information so why would I bother taking a chance you may not offer it. I will go elsewhere obviously.

Stephen unfortunately it is based on our underwriting acceptance criteria which is reviewed daily. Apologies.

So there you have it - get these perfectly good cars off the road by pricing them out of sight.

Firstly, I agree I don’t understand the need for such secrecy as regards the cut-off points for age and/or value.

But are they really “pricing it off the road”, i.e. by giving an exorbitant quote for TPFT insurance? Or is that quote actually reasonable enough but your issue is that you just don’t want TPFT?

Here’s another 2004 Mondeo Estate with low mileage – asking price just €800 and could probably be bought for less if anybody wanted it:

Don’t think I’d be too pushed with comprehensive insurance myself if I had an €800 car, particularly since the excess would probably be around €300 or €500 anyway.

Why would you want fully comp on a 2004 Mondeo, no offence but this makes no sense especially when you consider the excess on any claim you may have on it in the future.

I wouldn't bother with fully comp on any car valued under 5K TBH, the numbers don't stack up for me for the extra cost

The quote was a stripped down cover. Expiring price from Allianz was similar for Fully Comp with breakdown and windscreen etc. but they jacked it up I guess because of the age as the risk is the same.
This is just basic cover at same price. So if I don't know the break points I cannot guarantee getting a quote on a newer car if that is my option. There must be a known age limit at least but it's a secret.

In fairness to the person on the other end of the phone, they're just a phone jockey that punches your details into their computer and a number is returned based on the algorithm designed by people way above their pay grade. They have zero control or knowledge of how these numbers are arrived at so giving out to them is pointless. Just do what we all do every year and shop around until you find the best deal.

15 years seems to be the breaking point for most insurers.

It's obvious they don't want your business so you should take it elsewhere.

15 years seems to be the breaking point for most insurers.

Had Liberty policy for a few years 20011-14 ,car at the time was a 04 2 litrecpetrol Mondeo, insurance went up e300 when the renewal came in, I called them up ,no movement on price, take it or leave it attitude, left it and got insured for e50 more than the previous year .

OK peeps I have a quote from AXA for Fully Comp me and wife with windscreen cover and damage x's 500
using same details as before price is 350.00. We dont do much mileage so went for lowest option. Valuation question is "up to 3.000.00" and they know the year from the reg so looks good to me.
