My car failed nct on the underbody inspection and it needs welding underneath around the boot area and underneath wheel arches etc. I'm just wondering/asking do I need to get the welder/mechanic to put a primer paint over the welded pieces. Is that the requirement from the nct centre does anyone know?

My car had a spot weld for an exhaust bracket after last year's test and I doubt if the mechanics put a primer on it. The weld took less than 5 mins and passed the NCT afterwards.

The weld have to be left exposed for the NCT to examine them. They would have stapled a piece of paper to the fail sheet explaining this.

I had to get welding done on the driver's side sill of one of my cars about 2 years ago for the NCT. Brought it in for the retest with primer on the repair and it passed just fine. Another time I had to get the passenger side done and I brought it back for the retest fully repainted and it passed again.
Not sure what the rules for the NCT are but I've done both primer and full paint and passed each time......

Just last year I had to get both front sills welded on my car, checked with nct guy before getting it done and he said it was fine to get it painted before being checked.

painted is fine once weld is not covered with seam sealer or thick underbody paint.
