Can someone recommend a cheap heart rate monitor that I can pair with my Android phone so that apps like Runkeeper etc can announce my heart rate periodically? I am assuming this is a thing so that you we don't have to constantly watch the HRM or our phones!

Xiaomi Mi Band 1S/2/3/4. All have heart rate monitors.

Polar are probably best for the chest strap, they've a new one out - H9 for €59 which should work via a bluetooth connection.

Thank you both for those recommendations. Just to be clear, I am specifically looking for something I can use to announce my BPM over audio through my phone - even better if it will tell me if I go above or below certain BPMs - whether I am outdoors using something like Runkeeper, or just at the gym on the bike - do the devices you recommend work this way?

A HRM strap will capture your heart rate and transmit it to your phone (or sports device). What you're looking for (specifically vocal announcements etc), is a dependency of the software (e.g. Runkeeper, Strava etc).

Doing a quick search, most sports apps don't seem to offer this functionality. This thread mentions a couple (Runtastic, Training peaks), but you'll have to pay for a premium version, and it's not cheap and may not do exactly what you're looking for. Probably cheaper and easier to get yourself a dedicated sports tracking watch and associated HR Strap.

I got this Wahoo and I love it , don't even notice I'm wearing it. I wear it on my forearm but can be worn on bicep. Very accurate, I got it as my wrist HRM on watch was not .

Thanks for the input guys. After going through featues and reviews I ordered a Wahoo TICKR for my chest yesterday. I was in touch with Wahoo Suppport, and although their app will announce when out of heart rate ranges on IOS, disappointingly not on Android. I am going to try RunnerUp and Sportstracker for the announcements, hopefully they play nice with Runkeeper and Spotify.
