Private sale to a dealer

Guys, anyone got any do and don't advice for selling privately to a dealer?

It's a small dealer. Decent online presence with verified numbers. Agreed a sale price today. No exchange of docs / keys until receipt of a bank draft. He paid me a deposit (recieved in my bank already).

He has suggested that once he has the draft, he will send a picture and suggested I send a photo of the registration so he can submit the registration to Shannon online. Seems a bit odd, but he wont have the car or keys.

Just don't want to make any rookie mistakes. It's my first sale outside of a trade-in.

I can only speak of my personal experience here and I’d tread carefully.

Sold my last Car to a garage in Nenagh last year with no problem with similar scenario you described.

You are supposed to fill out an RF105 form with the dealer and give him the logbook and he will transfer ownership online. I’m guessing he is just saving you some hassle and bypassing the rigmarole of filling in the forms etc. I don’t see anything wrong with what is proposed

No harm in holding out giving out the registration serial number until he has paid in full.

Quick question, he paid by bank transfer for the deposit but will get a draft for the rest?

Has he seen the car etc?

He did see the car, and transferred the deposit. The total sale is too large for a first time online transfer. Draft is going to be quicker.

    This smells odd.
Why send photo of the draft.
Why request photo of reg from you - surely he knows reg already?

    Reg document I presume

    Ah yes ok.
Still dont know why a photo of a draft entitles him to the reg cert or a photo of it.
Surely his bank could have done the transfer to you?

Not too big if he goes into his bank to transfer the balance , plus it’s a second transfer after the deposit to the same account?

I've done bank transfers to suppliers of 50k + in work, easy to do. He might have to call his bank but that's about the height of it

Sure he has to look out for himself as do you but i wouldnt be giving him.the registration book or a photo until.you are happy that you have all the money.
Imagine if he does ahead and changes ownership.
You then have a car for which he has the reg cert in his name.
He could play silly beggars then over the payment - he xould claim he has a buyer and cant pay you til he hands over the car to new owner.
There is every kind of chancer out there.

Thanks to everyone who passed on advice.

To close this out, I got payment in full via bank transfer before passing over any of the log book details. Dealer was sound about it in the end.
