    I have been told by many people that they are illegal in Ireland . But seen a pair today in a shop in Dublin city .I asked a Gardai today in o Connell street and he said it’s only illegal If you carry them in public, but ok to have in your house.

    So ? ,is this right?.

    I can't answer this question but I'm sure someone who is knowledgeable on the subject will be along to take a stab at it soon.

    It is illegal to buy, sell, loan, hire, display etc a samurai sword. If you owned one prior to the 2009 legislation you can keep it, but you can't sell it, give it away etc.

    There is an exemption for pre-1954 swords. But there is also a strange exemption for "swords made the traditional way by hand". Due to this exemption there is now no shortage of Chinese forges making swords in the "traditional way". They start at a couple of hundred euro but you can buy and sell them without breaking the law.

    It is both legal and illegal to own display or import a katana or any other sword, depending on the mood of the individual garda or revenue officer under section 7 of the I-dont-like-de-look-of-dat amendment to the firearms act 2007

    Introducing a law banning samurai swords was a stupid decision but on the bright side you see far fewer fedora and trench coat garbed losers walking around with them these days, thinking they’re Keanu Reeves in the Matrix.

    Wheezing and vaping their way down to the shop to top up on pop, sneering at at joggers and anyone with less than 45% body fat. Rosy cheeks peppered with crisp dust and pubey facial hair.

    A Samurai sword is the coolest weapon in the world, just watch the final fight in Kill Bill vol 1 for proof.

    Just imagine the visual image that Woke Hogan would dazzle us with if they held back their hatred/resentment towards anything slightly different to them... just imagine what their paragraphs would read like if they opened up with their pent up aggression.

    Yes these imaginary sword wielding people were a blight in our country.

    Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    Ah Gai-Jin, you ask me to expose the soul of old Japan. I could more easily plunge the wakizashi into my own belly.

    Imagine if they had access to proper Damascus steel

    Katanas are folded 2 to the power 15 times*. Flexible yet capable of being sharpened.

    * 32000 folds

    Katanas are pretty crappy. The steel was folded to hammer out impurities from the Tamahagane. Plus the design never evolved unlike in Europe. It’s a myth that the katana was some sort of light saber while the European long sword was a sharpened crowbar.

    All pretty mute as both were backup/side arms. The spear/lance were the knights/samurai primary weapon. I’m generalising a bit as the samurai were big into bows as well whereas the bow was mainly a peasants weapon in Europe

    First they came for the socialists...

    They did put a lot of time and craftsmanship into individual blades in fairness, due to decent steel being scarce and very expensive in Japan.
