Rarely rent cars.....Had the day set up to move some stuff in a hired van.....rocked up to rental place....no sir only credit cards..ok..mmmm.. manager...mm... we'll take a debit card and take 2.5k out but you need 2 payslips from last 3 months....self employed ....oohh your accountant usually provides SEmployeds with payslips....no payslips.
Rang another crowd...debit card no problem...come on in...went in..oh you don't have two proof's of address and a bank statement on you...no good
Ended up at the dearest place with debit card and licence and there was no bother. No 2.5k either just the charge and gas.
Have plenty of money in debit card and have no problem with 2.5k deposit. Sure a fella could have nothing and still have a credit card..makes no sense to me??
Wasted a few hours aswell🙄

I feel your pain and anger, I've stuck with the same crowd (Hertz) since.

I always book these over the net.

I tried to book a rental car in Dubai mall once and the guy there wouldn't take cash or a prepaid master card. Another time i was in Paris Beauvais airport and they wouldn't take cash.

I'd always try to do it over the internet.

It's all to do with insurance. If you leave a credit card and don't come back with the car the rental agency can claim the full value of the car back off the credit card companies insurance.
Visa debit empty the account dump the card no come back. The 2.5k deposit is juat incase you don't come back and it can be any mandatory amount tbh

What I've found with them is that they're not actually a lot more expensive than the others but the customer service is top notch.

I asked the rep the first time about temporarily parking my own jeep while I took away the van and he said no bother I'll move my own car and you can park there, the traffic wardens know me.

The next time I asked him over the phone would he have a particular van as I was half interested in buying one and he said he didn't have one but he would get one dropped over from another branch first thing in the morning for me.

Small touches like that go a long way, it sure beats dealing with the trainee vegetables some of the other firms employ front of house.
