Laptop Suggestion for Editing

Hi All,

Looking to buy my son a laptop for his 18th, his is currently in college doing film and tv and usually has to make short film so needs to edit footage quiet often (he currently does this in school as his laptop is very slow). Budget is 600-800 euro? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

for video editing you need 16gb ram (especially going fwd), a strong cpu (like a H series cpu or new as-yet-unreleased Ryzen chips) and lastly and maybe less important a good quality screen with good colour coverage for colour accuracy. maybe portable required as he is a student?

not really going to get that for 800 in a laptop. that sort of machine is something like a dell xps which is nearer 2000 euro.

in this case for this budget could be better off getting a desktop and monitor alone or maybe with a cheap secondary laptop.

if you want a laptop for your budget buy a ryzen 5 8gb ram like the asus vivobook 15 in argos with up-gradable ram (which it has) and buy a 16gb sodimm ram stick. sell the 8gb one from the laptop then.

but it will have a poor quality screen and won't handle 4k video editing .

actually this laptop has a 4gb soldered and 4gb stick replaceable config

so it might be enough to get an 8gb stick to bring it up to 4 (soldered into laptop) + 8gb = 12gb. but you could buy a 16gb as that would be even better for video editing as that's very ram hungry.

it's very easy to change the ram if you never done it - just click in and out.
