Blocked Toilet

    Hi

Just looking to see if anyone can recommend a good toilet un-blocker? Standard plunger isn't doing the trick it seems.

Downstairs toilet is acting up, every second flush the water is rising and goes back down, if any tissue is put down there it takes a couple of flushes to get rid of. Anything else than a pee is currently banned! :D

Any tips or advice if anyone has faced the same?

    Thanks

Blockage could be in the main water pipe outside as well possibly. Have you checked the drains?

Check out the gun type unblockers

You pump it up and discharge the air into the water which creates a pressure wave that can dislodge the blockage. I find one or two is enough to clear any blockages but ymmv

    Something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJAY3EAnlOs

Yeah, probably something in the main pipe causing the blockage, you need the likes of dyno rod in to properly unblock it.

You can give the likes of Mr. Muscle a go, but it probably won't get down far enough and the pipe will be too wide.

I'd be a bit worred about the pump-type unblockers unless you're happy that your pipework is new/solid. Too much pressure could break an old pipe or an old seal and then you have much bigger problems.

Yeah good point re the old pipes etc. My house is relatively new so never had to worry about that

You might also consider using some descaling solution if you are in a hard water area. I found that scale build up in the toilet was causing problems, snagging tissue etc. I used plenty of Harpic 100% Limescale remover and the problems lessened. It won't fix existing blockages but something to do as maintenance

You could fill the bath, sinks and put a a larger bucket of water down the toilet as well a flushing it, you might over load the blockage but from the sound of it call dyno rod now before it becomes totally blocked

If you have a power washer, Lidl are selling a 15m hose for unblocking drains.

Sometimes DIY tools are more effective that shop bought ones. This actually works, I've used it myself.

Get a mop. Put the head in a plastic bag, squeeze out all the air, and seal it to the handle with sellotape or the like.

Put it into the toilet as far as it will go. Plunge it up and down a few times and it will force water down the drain under pressure and clear the blockage.

Take the plastic bag off and dispose of it.

    Much better than a plunger.

This fella doesn't use the plastic bag. Won't be using that mop to clean the kitchen floor I hope.

    Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Tried plungers, plastic bag covered mops down the bowl and no joy.

Uncovered the man hole in the garden and could see the blockage (toilet roll and wipes etc). As the house is a newly built house there are three man holes in the garden, alongside each other horizontally. I thought that they all linked up alongside each other, however they don't, they all flow directly down the garden where they must meet up with the main drain pipe.

The drain that was blocked only gets the waste from the downstairs toilet which isn't used that much that such a build up occurred (would expect it from the en suite or main bathroom which flow into the different man holes). So I am thinking it was maybe backed up due to a blockage in the main drain. Bit of a mystery!

Had to get Dyno Rod out in the end. A bit of prodding with the rods and plungers did the trick. Will invest in some rods now too I think, will be handy to have.

    Cheers
