Security camera

Wondering if anyone has recommendations on a good value one that can record at night and run off its own power supply. Car was vandalised last week and this week was left with a bogus notice, complete with bad grammar, claiming to be the Gardai. Basically they don’t like me parking where I do on our street (totally legal and not obstructing). Any advice appreciated.

Do you mean a dash cam or something fitted to your house?

Actually neither I think......a security camera that goes in the car and films outside of it.

If it's parked outside your house, try a Blink camera from Amazon. It records movement and sends a clip to your phone. The battery reportedly lasts two years. I've got one and I'm pleased with it. Relatively cheap and easy to set up.

I reckon it’s parked out someone else’s house.

The blink camera cannot be activated reliably through glass.

Correct - legally I might add!

Why don’t you park outside your own house? I’ve a neighbour like that that prefers to park outside my gaff instead of in his own driveway, drives me mad.

Of course you can legally do it, but maybe see it from your neighbours point of view. If there’s alternative parking available maybe try and use that.

Probably outside the WIFI range if it is parked outside another house and inside car.
Looks like a nice little device with great battery life and free storage.

Can’t be done. Too many cars in the area. Most spaces full by 5.30. If you get home when I do, you haven’t a hope in hell. So much so that this person isn’t even my neighbour. I have to park some streets over.

You can get a dashcam and power it off your car battery with an auto shut off when the battery gets to a certain power level.
However, what are you going to do with the footage?

You either get the person doing the damage on camera and report to Gardai, which escalates the situation and then sue them for the damage you have video proof of them causing.
Or, you don't get a good enough picture to prove definitively who it is or the damage isn't really damage but maybe an inconvenience (sticker on the window). Gardai may not follow it up so you either challenge the person directly or you sue and hope for some outcome.

Either way, I don't see an outcome that will see you parking in that location in the future.
I've seen these things escalate so much that neighbours have cameras directed at each others houses. It's all very stressful and neither person will come out of it in a good light.

My advise is for your own sanity and as someone has to defuse the situation, don't park in that location.

Appreciate the advice but (a) I’m never the one to rollover in these situations and won’t be here. I was out watching my car at 5.30 this morning and checked on it for 10 mins every hour since. (b) I have no choice. There is nowhere else to park.

How come nobody else takes this spot. Seems odd if it’s the only free space in the neighbourhood

    And where does it end?

    With me winning

Define winning, because with respect what you are outlining in terms of checking car every 10 minutes doesn't sound like winning to me.

If someone doesn't like you parking there, it's not worth the hassle. Just park another few streets over somewhere else. I sometimes park on a DCC street overnight, but I don't consistently do it outside the same house.

Even though I'm quite entitled to park there (and pay DCC Red Zone fees), I still think it's bad manners to do so on a regular basis as it does inconvenience the residents there.

I can't believe you actually got up at 5.30am to watch your car, that's crazy behavior to be honest, and sounds about as far from "winning" as you can get.

In any case, if someone is going to intentionally damage your car, or even let air out of the tyres, a security camera A) won't stop them B) won't be likely to identify them.

There was a guy stabbed in Dublin recently for something like this (allegedly). A parking space isn't worth getting stabbed over OP
