    Hi..
My father is due to travel to England in a few days and would be due to fly home the day before his passport expires, is he ok to use it in this situation?
I know, or think a passport is not necessarily required for travel to UK from here, but he insists on using it.
    Many thanks in advance.

He's grand as long as he's an Irish citizen

Depends on airline as Ryanair requires it.

Book flights and enter the expiry to know for sure.

You need a valid passport/ID Card for travels between EU countries, now UK has left the EU, but its still in transition mode, so EU rules will still apply. Youll be grand

Edit: not 100% sure, but i think you can use a driving licence for flights to uk with aerlingus

    Wrong

You do not need a passport to go to the uk. Otherwise you would need a passport to go to say Newry , crossmaglen , Derrylin or any other place in the north.

The time I need a passport to nip across the border to my cousins will be a strange day in the history of ireland

While not necessary legally many of the airlines now insist on a passport.

It should be fine, many non eu countries require it to be no closer than 6 months to expiry but not the U.K. as far as I know.

He should bring his driving license as backup as technically that on its own should be sufficient.

You do with some airlines.... No option.

Others accept driver's licence for example.

Not wrong, I was talking about EU, for UK and IRL a Common Travel Area rules apply. You will be ok with any ID, but if you fly from Cork to Belfast will Ryanair, you will still need a passport/ID Card cos thats the rule of Ryanair.

You don't need to renew it. The posters arguing on the thread ignored your central issue. His passport is valid for this trip until the day it expires.

Apply online today for a replacement passport.

I did it last week and the replacement was posted through my letterbox less than 24 hours later (23 hours 54 minutes to be precise).

    Fantastic service.

As Ireland and the UK are in a common travel area, no passport is legally required so the only applicable requirements are those laid down by the airline you've travelling with.

Ryanair's requirement is that the passport is valid and in date so you can use it for travelling with them up to and including its date of expiry.

Personally I wouldn't be bothered renewing the passport now, just for this trip.
