Testing tumble drier element

On a Whirlpool tumble drier .. what the difference between a fail and pass when testing the resistance on the heater element.
Open circuit is a fail obviously.
Model number unknown at the moment.

I've been conscripted to change the element on a friend's drier but it seems to be an expensive part. I don't want to buy one only to find the problem is not the element.
    Thanks

If you are getting 230v at the heater terminals and it doesn't heat then the element is faulty, if you are not getting 230v you will have to trace back the break down in supply with a meter

Thanks. My friend says her helpful home appliance supplier will take back the new element if that doesn't solve the problem.
€50 for an element. Better than some prices of ~£90 on the Whirlpool site.
