    Hello all,

I'm looking for advice on how to transition to another type of job.Since I have been 18, I have worked in customer service.Over a decade, I have worked in different aspects of retail from sales assistant, branding, managing etc.I understand that many jobs require some level of customer service however face to face customer service is an area I need to get out of.I know I have transferable skills but I am wondering how I can make the transition to a new industry that I have no expierence in? Do I have to resort to a unpaid internship in order to gain expierence in a new industry?

What type of area are you looking to get into? You need to tailor your CV to these sorts of roles. You may need to take a transitional job, something similar to your old job but focusing on a different aspect, to help you make the leap fully to a new area. Have you got any qualifications?

I have a undergrad in public health but there doesn't seem to be many entry level jobs in this area, at least at the moment anyway.Thank you for that advice. I am pretty open to new roles just nothing with sales, profit and excessive consumerism.

I don't understand what this sentence means.

I think instead of "being open" and going from role to role, what do you actually want to do?

Half the battle is trying to figure out what you want to do - no one here can really help with that.

Do you have a LinkedIn profile? Try looking up companies you'd like to work for and checking out what kind of jobs they have going.

The idea of starting at the bottom of a company and working your way up is LONG gone. I was in retail for 5 years after college before I realised that the jobs I thought I was working my way up to were being filled by college grads who just felt more entitled to a management role than me.

Pick out the job you want and if it's clear your not qualified then sure, aim a little lower to gain some experience, but honestly you definitely shouldn't need to do an unpaid internship. It's very dependent on what kind of role you want. Obviously if you want to be a scientific researcher, you'll need specific qualifications, but something like operations, business consulting, and other management roles often don't have strict entry criteria.

Civil Service. With some people management you should be able to get an Executive Officer grade position competitions permitting. There should be a new Dublin competition this year or next.
