Applying for Disability allowance?

    Hi all,

I was looking for a bit of advice on applying for disability allowance.
I've been suffering with mental health issues for most of my life. I had been trying to cope with it on my own but about 6 months ago I decided to look for help.

I went to my GP and explained how I was feeling. He was reluctant to prescribe me anything without me seeing a counsellor first. I got a letter from my local CIPC saying I am on the waiting list but still have not been seen yet.
I feel as though I am betwwen a rock and a hard place as the saying goes cause in the meantime life goes on and I could do without the extra pressure being on JSA brings.

I had the intention of having everything documented through GP and counselling visits before applying but I am not sure how to proceed now.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Maybe you could apply simultaneously for illness benefit and disability, with the aid of your gp, I suspect you might get illness benefit, but maybe denied disability, but you d never know your luck. I believe illness benefit can be claimed for up to two years, you must provide regular certs from your gp to your local welfare office, while claiming it. This will remove some of the pressures of claiming jsa, as you should not be requested from partaking in normal jsa activities, including signing, while claiming illness benefit. Best of luck

Hi again.. thanks very much for the information and your response.. would you happen to know the rate of pay for illness benefit if you don't have any PRSI? I'm young and never had a taxable job

Peter you won’t get any Illness Benefit if you’ve never paid any PRSI.
However you will have to complete an illness benefit application including the GP certificate part of it and bring it to the SW office in order to get sn SWA payment instead of JSA.
The SWA will be €2 less then the JSA you are getting right now.
