Beside game of thrones or other media, how do names become popular?

I have heard of two Donogh's recently its now in the top one hundred names

I do have one friend with a completely unique name, she has never come across anyone with the same name, she was called after a Celtic princess.

I could post a massive long post on this detailing the bowels of the Irish pscyche, but I'll spare you all the reading and just type:

Notions. Esp anything to do with some ancient princess.

Often names become popular because of some celebrity or other.

Names like Odrán and Fiadh have become popular among the upwardly mobile Gaelscoil sect.

On the other hand, traditional religious names have declined in popularity. For decades, Mary was the most popular Irish girl's name. It got dethroned as #1 in 1983, fell out of the top 10 in 1990, fell out of the top 50 in 2006, and now it's struggling to stay in the top 100.

'Malibu, come in for your dinner' was a refrain I once heard in a Dubalin accent whilst holidaying in Cork once.

A few years ago every house in Ireland had a baby girl called either Caoimhe Mia or Chloe. Horrible names.

I just like that there are a few Sauls and Dexters floating around.

I wonder if there are many Walters or Gustavos.

    Maybe even a Hank.

One name for 0-5, then rename them.

Wouldn't change the fact I think Caoimhe Mia and Chloe are awful names.
