I read about this in the Irish Times here: https://www.irishtimes.com/news/education/trinity-college-plans-wildflower-meadow-on-college-green-1.4183714 and instantly disliked the idea from an architectural heritage point of view. Took a look yesterday and definitely think it will spoil the pristine man-made vista.

That said, wildflower meadows are a thing close to my heart and I have a friend near Downpatrick who has spent a lot of time and quite a few bob on successfully creating one.

I have a major gripe with all the institutions such as manufacturing facilities, hospitals, schools etc. that either have enormous areas of unnecessary concrete/tarmac or grassland prairies which would be ripe for developing wildflower meadows and better located than TCD for a myriad of reasons.

My kids attend one such institution in South County Dublin with over 900 students and acres of the aforementioned prairie grassland.

I suppose that I shouldn't be surprised as the school doesn't even have a natural history club. How on earth are children supposed to grow up with an appreciation of nature and its importance to our own survival? :(

Sorry for bin a cynic and i love the idea of wild flower Meadows and how they help the bees and biodiversity.
BUT far to many business and schools they are using this as an excuse to reduce caretaker costs, i know three full time care takers who lost there ground keeping jobs due to the introduction of wild meadows.
