Quantity of applications for every job posted

    I am a recent graduate and work in IT for 1 year now and my contract will soon expire and I am forced to look for another job. I applied for around 20 jobs and heard back around 3 times, currently waiting for the next stage in the interview processes. I am applying for jobs that I know I can do with 100% certainty but in the majority of my applications, I do not hear anything back at all, just thank you for applying. Then I look at the amount of applicants and for almost all of them there is at least 100 applicants. I have applied for a few jobs that have near 500 applicants. If Ireland is at full employment, how come there are so many job applications for every job? So out of the 500 applications, only 1 candidate is selected. I am sure that out of these 500, at least one of them has something like 5 or 10 years of experience and is applying for a graduate level job.

    Sorry if this sound like a rant. I am starting to feel hopeless now since I only have 1 year of experience and there are hundreds of applicants for every job posted. I feel like I might even go back to one of these manual jobs like McDonald's since I cannot compete with my low experience even in entry level jobs.

    When you apply on LinkedIn, you can see how many people have applied for that job. Obviously LinkedIn is not the only place many employers advertise, so I assume for positions like Microsoft, there are near 1000 applicants.

    You got your first job, you will get another job. There are so many applicants because people apply for jobs they haven't got a hope of getting or don't have the qualification for why they do that I don't know. Don't worry.

    LinkedIn applications are going to include huge amounts of people who need, and will not get, a skills visa to work in Ireland, as well as lunatics. You can dismiss up to 90% of that application figure.

    I've been on the hiring side of IT jobs, paying over 50k, and got single to low double figures of real applications. Plenty of nonsense applications and this was never advertised on LinkedIn. In one case INIS decided that the person who had accepted the offer was not being paid enough for a skills visa and it had to be re-advertised cause nobody else that had got through was of any use... I'd actually agree with INIS on that!
