    Hi all,

My husband is on Disability allowance and I am his dependent on his claim. I am also a carer for my son.

I am going back to college in September if I qualify for Susi,

How will this affect our payments? Will I be entitled to a grant?

We would really struggle if I lost my half rate carers allowance and my husbands social welfare was cut.

    Any advice?

If your course is any more then 18 1/2 hours per week then you can’t get Carers any more.
If it is in excess of 18 1/2 hours then your husband should apply for Carers in respect of your son instead.
Yes you should apply for the SUSI grant.
Don’t let anyone persuade you to apply for BTEA, much better let your husband get 1/2 rate Carers and you can apply for SUSI.

If she applies for BTEA then she won’t get the SUSI grant. If she comes off Carers then he can continue getting her and kids as dependents and he can also get 1/2 rate carers and she can get the SUSI grant too.

What would happen if I didnt tell carers? Since susi doesnt even take them into account would they ever find out?

If you didn’t tell Carers that you were no longer caring full time for your son, and you continued to claim your Carers payment, then you’d be breaking the law.

If your son is under 16 then your probably getting DCA for him so your husband is completing the Carers Allowance form and the medical bit doesn’t have to be done at all. It’s just the means test.
I know the forms are a pain in the hole.
I hope it works out for you.

When you fill out your susi application on line you are asked about your income so you will have to say you are getting carers
