Some shocking incidents tonight including some of the Longford feuds of recent. Hopefully some useful information for the Gardai from the general public tonight to get some of this scum off our streets.

It's a feud between families who are never going to talk to Gardai, sadly.

Good programme, well made and very professional. Always nice to be reminded the majority of Gardai do good work.

Yes, an 07 to 08. First mistake.

Then the "high performance" BMW is a 318i! Plus the Garda said it was 04 when the photo clearly shows its 06.

Really makes them out to be a tad short if the mark.

Stabbing in a library. I am a retired library worker, at best of tones there has been a sizeable anti-social / mental illness element among clientele. It’s getting worse now. I know of one colleague who was stabbed as a result of working in the library service.

This is fascinating, why do they flock toward libraries?

I can't help but burst out laughing when they say some cars are ''High Performance'' or they can't identify them.

Also, Anybody know how much the necklace was worth?

Free heating, free shelter, can’t easily be thrown out. Magnet for decent homeless people as well as those not accepted anywhere else.

You've rang up with this valuable information I hope.

The one featured this evening was in Central Library, ILAC. A previous one happened to somebody working in Ballyfermot Library. Library staff gave at various times been under threat from users, myself included. I retired earlier than intended due to health issues brought about by a heart attack, that happened me on the premises, in relation to this stuff. And they wanted to have more branches unstaffed.

So libraries are a no go spot now? Its disgusting what people have to deal with during the course of their working day not to mention people who use the facility.

I always remember the Ilac library as a bit rough and intimidating, going back to my weekly trip there as a child in the 80s (always followed by an ice cream float in the Soda Fountain on the stairs). There was often a bit of a ruckus from people who seemed to have a combination of addiction and mental health issues and nowhere else to go.

As a child I was most concerned by the strong smell of urine and didn't really give much thought to why these people were in that state or situation - but obviously the library offers a reasonably comfortable place to spend the day. So I think libraries have long had that element. Not surprised to hear it was the Ilac, but still, imagine sitting minding your own business in the library only to be stabbed. Hope he's found.

Mad stuff. I suppose the rise in popularity of the internet has only served to draw more of these types in, while simultaneously drawing in less of the traditional folks who now have no need to avail of a physical library for their information. So libraries are becoming more and more concentrated with these folks, quite the dangerous phenomenon.

There was always an element of ordinary decent homeless in public libraries throughout the world, mainly for the warmth, but in more recent decades and years drugs have played a big part. To use the computers you have to register with ID, but this individual obviously hadn’t made himself known to staff at any stage. When I worked in the ILAC in the 90s there was a guy who used to snort cocaine, tried to hand me his rag covered in blood from his nose.

In certain parts of Scandinavia which gave a stable local population they introduced staff less libraries, everyone being community spirited. They introduced it into Offaly Branches here as a pilot, and I heard of some problems, especially with young teenagers being molested, a haven for paedophile types. Glad I’m out of it all now.

Interesting, you attribute a lot of it to drugs? I suppose you could say that about mental illness in general. It appears to have risen a lot in the last few decades, I often wonder if you can blame drugs alone or if there is more at play socially.

The romantic concept of a library is for sure a little bit lost in modern society, but what you are describing is altogether more sinister. It almost justifies closing the lot of them down when you hear horror stories like that. Is anyone decent still benefiting from them?

Over 200 library cards rescinded when Offaly libraries introduced stafflesss opening hours.
I too spent some time working in a public library and yeah, there is definitely a problem with antisocial behaviour.

Anyone know why crimecall isn't on RTE player? Would have thought that it is one of the shows that would benefit most for being able to stream anytime. Also, it's made by RTE so can't imagine that it's a licensing problem by having it on RTE player.

Someone raised the issue of Crimecall not being on RTE Player on Twitter previously, and RTE replied as follows:

Since the information provided on any edition of Crimecall can, within days or even hours, became outdated or legally sensitive, it is more prudent not to make any edition of the programme available online for catch-up viewing.
