Headstone Cost

I hope it’s okay to post something like this here - so my mam passed away in May aged 57 and I am about to start looking to purchase her head stone. I have no idea where to start or how much this costs. I’m an only child so I don’t really have brothers and sisters to discuss it with and my dad passed away 10 years ago this May but my mam could never afford to put a headstone on his grave. So basically I’ll be doing it for both of them. I’m based in Dublin and there buried in Fingal cemetery.

Can anyone give me an idea of about how much this is going to cost? Or the best place to go?

    Thanks for the help x

https://www.fingalmemorials.ie/ is what Google showed up for me. Talk to them about what you want. I'm sorry for your loss. I've also lost both parents. I'm not an only child though. Have a chat with relatives if you can. You're not alone. Reach out to your aunts and uncles. They might help financially to ease the burden.

"Monumental mason" is the trade that produces headstones, and there are quite a few around. Googling will help you find monumental masons in Dublin, and you can visit a couple of them to see what kind of work they do, and talk about what they would charge to make and erect a headstone for you.

Also, many masons put the firm name in small letters on the back or base of the headstones they make, so if you see headstones that you like the look of you can contact the firm concerned to see what they would charge for one like that.

Take a couple of photos of headstones that you like, and also a photocopy of your grave papers, when you visit the mason.

Hey! Thanks a million for your help. I haven’t went to these guys yet because I’ve been told there really expensive. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to cut costs or their headstone, I just want a reasonable price.

Unfortunately when it comes to this I’m totally alone apart from my boyfriend. My mam has 7 brothers and sisters who actually haven’t spoken to me since the funeral. I assume because I choose to bury my mam in Dublin with my dad (because that’s what she always said she wanted) instead of in Wexford where she is from. My mam died quite suddenly so we never had this conversation in-depth but I still know what she wanted.

Financially it’s fine. My grandads house sold and each of his 7 children got about €9k each so as my mam has passed I got it so I have a good bit left to cover it after I cleared her overdraft and rent ect. Her family paid for the funeral though and 6 weeks later when I got the Cheque they demanded it back - I refused. Will probably get a solicitors letter off them at some stage lol. Thanks for the help and sorry for the ranting. Xx

Most headstones have the company on the back of them so have a look around the graveyard for an idea of some places.

It can be very hard to price headstones, there was a wide variation in prices when I was pricing headstone for my mother. It really depended on the type of stone, the headstone itself (size, shape) and what I wanted engraved.

I found the best was to go into the place itself and talk to someone about what I wanted. Think it ended up around €700 for what I got.

I am a stonecutter myself and the are 3 popular types of stone limestone, marble and granite
Granite been the shiny material it comes in about 8 popular colours
It's by far the better material and will last longer
Some colours are more expensive than others
I recommend you buy granite it will be there forever
Prices would start about 1000 euros they go up to 3000
Give me a PM if you have anymore questions I will try my best to help you
One place in dublin worth a shout would be irish crafted headstones they would be reasonable I'm told

I know a little about putting up a headstone but I did it down the country a few years ago so my prices are out of date. Still, I thought I would give you a couple of pointers which might help you a bit :-)
First of all, take a look around the cemetery and get an idea of what sort of headstones there are. Take a note (or better still - photos) of the headstones you like the look of and who erected them. Look out especially for the shapes of the headstones themselves and the graphics etched into them. If you aren't sure of the wording of what you want to put onto your headstone, you might get ideas from the ones which are there already.

If you're going to be getting a grave with a kerb, rather than one of those flat headstones set into the grass, take a good look at those kerbs. Or more specifically, the concrete under them. One of the most used monument works locally did such sloppy work with its concrete, we didn't bother going near them. Instead, we went with someone who didn't have as many headstones in the cemetery but was much more tasty.

There'll be nothing for it only for you to put time aside to call into some of these monument works and get quotes. Even that place which you heard is pricey. The more information you get about this, the more informed a choice you can make about the headstone. You will only be putting it up the once so doing it properly will be very important too. I wouldn't rule out people who operate in Meath or Kildare. As long as they're within reasonable distance of the cemetery, they might be only too pleased to get your business.
