Looks like my boiler has packed up. 15 years old. Started but died on me tonight. It is a firebird 90. House is a 3 bed semi.

Which make of boiler would you recommend. Which is energy efficient. What kind of money are we talking. My last question is is their a grant and how does it work. Thank you.

At the end of the day, if it packed up, it could be something simple like an ignition transformer, control box, fan motor etc
If you want to change anyway, fair enough, but more than likely it can be sorted and got running again for far less money than buying a new boiler.

My son had an issue with his last week and was worried about what he would have to spend to get a new boiler.
I talked him through troubleshooting and it turned out the solenoid coil had gone and we got a replacement for around €20 and had it changed in 5 mins

Thoroughly agree, I too have a Heatpac 2005 Firebird 90S fitted with a Riello G5X burner which has given utterly fabulous service and (even though I am repeating myself) has never tripped out on any fault condition in all this time.

I would certainly recommend spending a few bob repairing your old one except that it's falling apart structurally or something like that.

Cheers for the replies. It looks fine externally and it did kick in briefly last night before cutting out to the point where the rads had begun to get warm. When I press the red button on the boiler it tries to fire up before “clicking off”. If I put the timer to on an I right in thinking no oil is used unless the rads heat up? It’s just it will need to be set to on for an engineer to fully check the boiler?

Have you checked that you have oil in the tank?

I discussed recently changing my boiler which is currently in the utility room. The lad said that if we were to replace it, better off putting the new boiler outside..
Is your current boiler inside or outside?

Rang my plumber he asked the same question re oil. When I described the symptoms he thinks the boiler is airlocked. I have oil coming today and he is due out tonight. So fingers crossed it’s just airlocked. My tank is outside

Have you tried bleeding it ?

That will confirm if it's a oil supply issue.
