Food for dog with very few teeth

I have an elderly chihuahua that has just had most of his teeth extracted - he has all 4 of his canines and 4 teeth further back left. He has been on dry food all his life, but I assume he will no longer be able to eat it.

What do people do in this situation? I hate the smell of wet dog food, so was thinking of steeping his dry food in water?

Also, this may seem ridiculous but he is obsessed with hard chew toys - will I have to take these off him from now on?

Obviously he is on soft food/no hard toys right now as his mouth heals, but more looking at what to do in the future.

It's not quite the same but our cat only has about 4 teeth left - when we rescued her her mouth was in such bad shape that the vets couldn't save them. She eats the same dry food as our other cat, loves dreamies, etc. They free feed dry all day and then get a small portion of wet food as a treat at night. We checked with our vet and she said to get her back on dry food, that it wouldn't be a problem long term and it isn't.

What wet foods have you tried? I either use nature diet or Rocco and they smell fine. My dog had 1/4 of his jaw removed a few years ago and his 4th upper canine on one side removed last year. He gets a mix of raw and wet food. You might find that it’ll take your dog a while to get used to eating now so I’d play it safe with a soupy consistency for now and certainly nothing chewy/hard until his gums have healed.

I feed Rocco or lukullus wet and they small fine, not like dog food, they are better quality foods than supermarket stuff.

Some of these dogs/pets eat better than we do!
