Sky Install - New Build

    Hi,

Currently building a new bungalow. plan to put "tech hub" in the attic above the study which is most central room in the house

I want to put the sky q box in the attic & run HDMI cable/ethernet cable to the 2 main tvs i will have in the house. I'm aware magic eye does not work with the new sky q box.

Is there a workaround that i can still put the sky box in the attic and use both tv's as normal?

    Any advice appreciated

    Thanks

HDMI over co-ax is one option, discussed here recently

SkyQ mini boxes at each TV point with the main box in the attic is another option.

Thanks a million for your response , appreciate the info

Does the HDMI over co-ax allow for 4K?
Also is HDMI over co-ax neater & cheaper in the long run as the box in the attic will govern 1 tv & will only need 1 sky q mini box ( which can keep in attic also) as opposed to 2 mini boxes the other way ? ( want it as cable/box free as possible at the TV points)

So I am going to run co-ax & hdmi from attic to both my TV points. So I do need this https://www.freetv.ie/hd-to-rf-modulator/ in the attic alongside my sky q box in order for it to work?

& i will need 2 of these remotes also yes https://www.eurosatlondon.com/webshop/ir-senders-remotes/remote-handsets/sky-remote-controls/sky-q-ir-remote/

    1080p HD only

Probably neater and cheaper at the main TV point as you will only require a single co-ax cable from the modulator in the attic that can also carry the Saorview channels if required. I would recommend running an additional 1 or 2 co-ax cables to the TV points as spares.

If you opt for HDMI from the attic to the TV point you may not require the modulator and the bluetooth touch remote control may be able to control the main SkyQ box remotely.

Yes, the modulator will be located beside the SkyQ box in the attic

If you go for the modulator option the SkyQ non-touch IR remote control may be required if the touch remote control doesn't work at that distance.

    Thanks again for the info

One last question, want to run the cable for the dish now aswell as don't want any drilling when time comes for installing.

Which cable should I run? Will I need a separate cable for saorview & sky ?

Will run quad LNB be sufficient as per above link?

    Satellite grade cable e.g. CT100 - https://www.cai.org.uk/index.php/contact/downloads/product-certification-schemes/cable-certification/110-cai-certified-cables/file

The trade normally go with the cheaper RG6 which would be ok in a domestic installation but CT100 is recommended.

Separate cables for satellite and Saorview aerial.

SkyQ only requires 2 cables for their new tech wideband LNB but I would recommend running 4 for the satellite dish for future proofing such a distribution setup using quad or quattro LNBs.

For cables coming in from aerial/dish you could place a small bore pipe from outside into the attic ... very easy if you have gables. Block pipe and cables can easily be run during installation of dish & aerial.

Be sure to run Cat 6 cable as well as coax/hdmi to TV locations (and elsewhere).

Most insulation used these days is foil covered.
If your ceilings have this will any remote work 'through' the insulation?

Good point regards insulation. Thats my worry regards remotes not working. I'm guessing if that is the case would a workaround be that if I put a sky q mini box at each tv ( could bracket them in behind the TV so they would be neatly tucked behind it) & main sky q box in the attic ?

The main Sky q box needs to be connected directly to a TV to pair the viewing card as far as I know. I can do this from attic as running a HDMI cable to each TV point. So I'm guessing I will need a sky mini box at each TV aswell if I run into the remote issue as you pointed out?

How far from the main TV point would the SkyQ box in the attic be?

My brother's box was in a "power room" on the floor above, albeit with a concrete floor separating the 2 floors, and the bluetooth remote didn't work.

How many TV points will there be, you will be limited to using 2 Sky mini boxes at any one time? A HDMI modulator is an option for one of the TV points.

OP, aside from saving yourself the multiscreen fee (which is I suppose a good enough reason in itself) why go for this solution over the mini boxes? It’s one of the major benefits of Sky Q that you can have your multiroom TVs anywhere in the house and not have them physically connected to the satellite dish. Easy to move them about etc and of course you can watch different channels on each TV at the same time.
