Hi, was in SW today to provide all my documents and filled out app forms etc.

The man gave me my temporary public service card to claim the money once it comes through

Any idea how long it usually takes to be approved or get a letter saying when the payment will be there?

Just asked same question been waiting since February 6th

Are you not on supplementary welfare allowance then?

He said I should expect a letter within the next 5 days, but notsure how long it will take for payment to come through..

Obviously cant be left without anything for two weeks so if it goes beyond next week I will go and ask for supplementary.. if thats allowed

yes that is what it is, only seen as a last resort. if you have money to sustain yourself until payment is issued, then you wont be awarded it. money will be deducted from an jobseekers owed once jb is awarded

You are allowed money in the bank upto a certain amount

thats for jobseekers benefit, supplementary welfare (swa) is assessed differently and awarded by a community welfare officer. swa is awarded if you are unable to sustain yourself while your jobseekers benefit claim is being decided. its actually a second claim. if you are awarded swa and are paid €400 for arguments sake and your Jobseekers benefit is awarded and you have arrears of €500 owed to you, you will only receive €100 arrears as the payments made by swa is deducted.

as the payment is issued by community welfare officer, it is seen as a last resort, you dont have money to sustain yourself while you jobseekers claim is being decided. If you have €5k in savings, it will not impact jobseekers benefit but a community welfare officer will not pay you swa as you have the means to support yourself. you will then be entitled to all of the Jobseekers benefit arrears.

You can have up to €20,000 in savings for jobseekers and up to €5,000 for SWA. Anything above is assessed as means for both.
